Michigan State offensive tackle Ethan Boyd entered the NCAA transfer portal. He’s been with the program since 2021.

Originally, Boyd entered the transfer portal back in the winter, but withdrew his name. Despite coming back for the spring semester, Boyd had a change of heart.

As a member of the Class of 2021, Boyd was a three-star recruit out of East Lansing (Mich.) High, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 19 overall prospect in the state, the No. 66 offensive tackle in the class and the No. 728 overall prospect in the class.

Boyd made his first start against Minnesota last year and also played multiple positions last season.

Former Michigan State associate head coach, offensive line coach, and run game coordinator Chris Kapilovic spoke to the media on the progress Boyd has made during last fall.

“Ethan Boyd has been playing quite a bit the last few games,” Kapilovic said. “He struggled with his technique early in this past game. We got him out of there and were able to talk through it, gave him a chance to collect his head, and to his credit, he played the whole second half clean and did a nice job.

“Ethan has made some really good strides with his body and his football IQ. When he is confident and does the things he is supposed to do. He is a very good player. Sometimes he doubts himself, gets a little panicky, and he gets himself in trouble. Those are the things that come with experience and maturity. I am really excited to see what is ahead for him in the future.”

Boyd got used to his new starting role. The redshirt sophomore said he gained about five pounds, but he feels lighter and stronger at the time.

“It feels great to get into the game, especially to start,” Boyd said. “I feel like when I have the opportunity to start, I can get into a little bit of a rhythm. I think I have been playing better the past couple weeks.”
