Offensive tackle Larry Johnson announced his commitment to Tennessee on Wednesday night. He previously played at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College.

“I felt like it was time to. It was a strong feeling,” Johnson told Brent Hubbs of Volquest. “Tennessee hit a little different. It just felt right. The staff was fired up and they said it brightened up their day when I told them. It’s beyond excitement for me. I can’t really find the words for how I feel right now.”

Johnson received an offer from Volunteers offensive line coach Glen Elarbee. It came following his performance in the NJCAA National Semifinals.

“He didn’t just call me up and offer me,” Johnson told Hubbs on Dec. 6. “He took the time out of his day and came from Knoxville to see our semi-final game. After the game, we had a nice long meeting. I learned a lot from him. We went over what Tennessee was about. He was teaching me and quizzing me to see where my mind was schematically as a lineman. He enjoyed visiting with me. I feel like he is really genuine.”

Johnson shared with Hobbs that he will visiting Knoxville on Dec. 17 and 18. He is open to playing at different spots on the offensive line.

“Wherever coach Elarbee needs me. I’m currently at right tackle. I can play both,” Johnson said. “I played both this year, but I currently start at right tackle.

“I feel like there are a lot of things I have to learn and like anyone you have weaknesses, but at the junior college level I feel like everything is pretty good.”

Johnson, who played high school football at Savannah (Ga.) Jenkins, is the third offensive tackle in Tennessee’s 2023 recruiting class. The others are Alpharetta (Ga.) Denmark four-star Shamurad Umarov and Knoxville (Tenn.) Knoxville Catholic three-star Trevor Duncan.

Tennessee’s group is currently No. 11 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 5 in the SEC. The Volunteers’ group is led by Long Beach (Calif.) Warren five-star quarterback Nico Iamaleava.
