Jason Bean agrees to free agent deal with Indianapolis Colts

He didn’t hear his name called in the 2024 NFL Draft the past few days, but former Kansas Jayhawk quarterback Jason Bean has found a new home in the National Football League. Shortly after the draft ended on Saturday night, the dynamic dual threat quarterback agreed to an undrafted free agent deal with the Indianapolis Colts. According to his agent Brett Tessler of Tessler Sports, many teams were interested in the former Jayhawk star, before he settled on joining Indianapolis.

He’ll be joining another young, budding star in the National Football League, former Florida signal-caller Anthony Richardson. Bean was one of the more dynamic dual threat quarterbacks in college football the past few seasons, showcasing his explosive running speed and ability to elude defenders in the open field.

In the 2023-2024 campaign, he completed 62.3% of his passes for 2,130 passing yards, while tossing in 18 touchdowns with seven interceptions. As a runner, he finished with 280 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. In his team’s 39-32 loss against Oklahoma State on Oct. 14, he completed 67.6% of his passes for 410 passing yards, while tossing in five touchdowns with two interceptions.

Bean saved a spectacular performance for the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, when the Jayhawks faced off against the UNLV Rebels on Dec. 26th. He completed 67.9% of his passes for 449 yards, while tossing in six touchdowns with three interceptions. Bean also tacked on 21 rushing yards on six attempts, in leading Kansas to a 49-36 win.

In 2022 against Texas Tech (Nov. 12), Bean completed 60.7% of his passes for 270 yards, while tossing in three touchdowns with one interception. He also had another solid showing against Oklahoma, completing 16 of 27 passes for 265 yards and four touchdowns while tossing in two interceptions. He also completed a pass to seven different receivers. Bean finished the year completing 64% of his passes for 1,280 passing yards, while tossing in 14 touchdowns and four interceptions. As a runner, he had 38 carries for 222 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

In 2021, as a redshirt junior, Bean started the first nine games for the Jayhawks. Against Coastal Carolina, he showcased his explosive ability as a runner, rushing 13 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns. He finished with his best stats as a runner that year, with 92 attempts for 400 yards and two touchdowns. As a passer, he got his feet wet with the Jayhawks, completing 56% of his passes for 1,252 yards, while throwing six touchdowns with six interceptions.

Before transferring to Kansas, Bean got his feet wet in college football with the North Texas Mean Green, throwing for over 1,200 yards total in three seasons. He also tossed in 17 touchdowns to go along with nine interceptions. He redshirted his first season (2018), but threw one interception in limited action.

As a high school prospect, Bean was a three-star recruit in the On3 Industry Rankings for the 2018 cycle. He was also rated as the No. 2,063 player in America and the No. 119 quarterback prospect in the country. Bean played his high school football for Lake Ridge (Mansfield, Texas). As a junior, he threw for 2,956 yards and 29 touchdowns, also rushing for 530 yards and seven touchdowns.
