If you’re in your second year under Brent Venables at OU, then you fully understand the weekly captain logic.

But for a lot of newcomers, it’s something they had never seen before. It’s also something they really appreciate.

The next batch of captains were named Monday afternoon with Cheetah linebacker Dasan McCullough, linebacker Jaren Kanak, offensive tackle Walter Rouse, center Andrew Raym and defensive tackle Jonah Laulu.

McCullough said he had never heard of this captain format before. He loves it, saying it gives you a chance to prove it every single week. Instead of just being named in August and moving on, it gives that motivation to keep striving each game.

It will be a homecoming for Kanak, originally from Kansas. OU heads to Lawrence to take on KU at 11 a.m. Saturday as part of Big Noon Kickoff on FOX.

Anderson earns Big 12 honor

If all you do is catch touchdowns, you’re going to get some honors. Wide receiver Nic Anderson was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Monday afternoon.

Anderson had five catches for 105 yards and two more touchdowns in the 31-29 victory against Central Florida.

“I mean I think I’m just lucky to be put in those situations because a lot of other receivers get check downs and stuff,” Anderson said. “I got a couple of check downs, too. So it’s not too crazy anymore. But still. Just blessed to get those opportunities.”

Anderson now has eight touchdowns in the last six games.

OU needed some help in the second half, and that’s where the leadership from someone like Raym does come in.

“There’s a confidence in that. I think we love two-minute drives,” Raym said. “Whenever we have to play fast or we have to go, we go. So, like I said, I don’t think it has anything to do with confidence. I think it’s that we need to establish ourselves faster.”
