Butler guard DJ Davis has entered the NCAA transfer portal. It will be his second transfer in as many seasons as he spent the first three years of his college career at UC Irvine.

Davis ranked third on the team this past season with with 13.5 points per game in addition to 3.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists. He will have one season of eligibility remaining wherever he decides to transfer.

Davis played high school basketball at Riverside Poly (CA). He committed to play at UC Irvine in 2020 over offers from several other mid major programs including UAB and Colorado State.

Davis made an immediate impact as a true freshman with the Anteaters in 2020-21. He appeared in 25 games to average 9.1 points across 20.3 minutes. Davis ended his career at UC Irvine just shy of 1,000 career points (948) and averaged a career high 15.0 points per game as a junior in 2022-23.

Whichever team lands Davis will be getting a sharpshooter, as he has a 36.8% 3-point percentage for his career with a total 216 triples made. His 149 3-pointers in three seasons with the Anteaters rank him 11th in program history.

DJ Davis is the 506th college basketball player to enter the transfer portal since it opened this past week.

Butler missed NCAA Tournament for sixth straight season

Butler was once held a spot as a dangerous mid major program in the late 2000s and early 2010s under Brad Stevens. The Bulldogs appeared in five straight NCAA Tournaments from 2007-11, advancing to the back-to-back national championship games in 2010 and 2011 but losing both times.

However, they have participated in the NCAA Tournament since 2018, a rare stretch for a once proud program. They might have made it in 2020 had the tournament not been canceled due to COVID restrictions, as they finished 22-9.

Butler just wrapped up its second season under former Ohio State coach Thad Matta. The Bulldogs will hope that they can turn things around and restore the winning tradition beginning next year after an 18-15 finish this past season.

Davis is the first Butler player to enter the transfer portal thus far, and the Bulldogs will aim to keep others from following suit.
