Skylar Wallace makes NCAA history in Gainesville Regional close out game
Skylar Wallace is one of the more decorated players in Florida Gator softball history. And on Sunday evening in the Gators’ Regional Final matchup vs. South Alabama, she added yet another impressive accomplishment to her profile. With the Gators dominating the Jaguars, Wallace scored her 302nd career run, tying Sierra Romero’s NCAA record.
The Gators had no problems with South Alabama on Sunday, advancing to the Super Regionals with a 9-1 whipping of the Jaguars. They’ll take on the Baylor Bears in their Super Regional matchup, after Baylor dispatched of Louisiana in their second game, 4-3 on Sunday evening. Baylor advanced to their first Super Regional since 2017. The winner of the series will officially punch their tickets to the 2024 Women’s College World Series.
Super Regionals will take place on May 24th-May 26th.
Florida won the 2024 SEC Tournament this year, their first such title since 2019 and the sixth in program history. Entering the 2024 NCAA Tournament, the Gators were hot, winning eight straight games. They’re seeking their first national title since 2015.
Skylar Wallace has already put together some historic seasons for the Gators. In 2023, she became the first player in Florida program history to earn NFCA Player of the Year honors. She also set Gator single season records in batting average (.447), slugging percentage (.980), and on base percentage (.595).
As a junior, she put together a historic season, becoming the only player in NCAA Division I history to post at least 70 hits, 70 runs, 50 RBIs, and 50 stolen bases in a single season. She earned NFCA second team All-American status after guiding the Gators back to the Women’s College World Series for the 11th time in program history. She broke the Florida program record for stolen bases, going 52-for-56 on the year. Wallace shattered the previous record held by Kelsey Stewart (36 stolen bases) from 2013 and 2014.
Wallace also finished the season ranked third nationally in runs scored (79), tying the previous program record set by Kelsey Bruder. Before transferring to Florida, she spent 2019 and 2020 with the Alabama Crimson Tide. In 2019 with the Tide, she earned SEC All-Tournament honors and was also named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.
It’ll be interesting to see how Wallace and the Gators finish up the rest of the 2024 postseason.
