2024 CB Jaylin Lackey flips commitment to Vanderbilt from Virginia
Snellville (Ga.) South Gwinnett three-star cornerback Jaylin Lackey announced Monday that he has flipped his commitment away from Virginia to the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Lackey had been committed to the Cavaliers since June but chose to flip to Vanderbilt just two days after the Commodores put a scare into No. 1 Georgia with a 37-20 loss.
Lackey is the nation’s No. 735 overall prospect and No. 72 cornerback in the 2024 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 87 player in Georgia.
The 6-foot-0, 180-pound Lackey does not currently have a publicly listed On3 NIL Valuation. The On3 NIL Valuation is the industry’s leading index that sets high school and college athletes’ projected annual value (PAV). The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
Lackey bolsters improved Vandy class
Lackey joins a Vanderbilt class that has improved on its 54th-ranked 2023 recruiting class. The Commodores’ 2024 class sits No. 41 nationally in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. Cibolo (Texas) Steele four-star safety Dontae Carter ranks No. 161 in the On3 Industry Ranking and headlines Vanderbilt’s class.
“I chose Vanderbilt because my family and I felt that it was a good school to go to,” Carter told On3. “I always dreamed of playing in the SEC, so going there on a visit and then hanging around Coach (Clark) Lea, I believe they are actually on the come-up to take over the SEC, and that’s something I want to be a part of. They recruited me hard and they were the first school to really believe in me.
“I always wanted to play in the SEC on a team full of great coaches and players, and they’re building a team,” he continued. “Outside of the football side, it’s great academics as well. The decision didn’t come easy; it was stressful, but I went opportunity over love.”
Wagoner (Okla.) four-star athlete Witt Edwards rates as the second blue-chip prospect pledged to the Commodores. He committed to Vanderbilt earlier this month.
