The 2024 Big Ten Softball Tournament concluded the first round on Wednesday evening. In one of the night session games, the No. 10 seed Maryland Terrapins knocked off the No. 7 seed Penn State Nittany Lions, 3-1. The Terrapins advanced to the Big Ten Quarterfinals. Courtney Wyche pitched a complete game for the ‘Terps, just allowing three hits and an earned run, while throwing five strikeouts, and walking five batters.

Diamond Williams blasted a solo shot in the top of the fourth inning, putting the ‘Terps up 1-0. Penn State’s Liana Jones belted a solo blast to tie it up at 1-1. But that was the closest the Nittany Lions would come the rest of the game.

The nightcap on Day 1 saw the No. 11 seed Wisconsin Badgers knock off the No. 6 seed Ohio State Buckeyes, 5-1. Badgers’ pitcher Tessa Magnanimo had a sensational performance, tossing a complete game, shutting down the Ohio State offense in the process. She only allowed four hits, an earned run, and fired seven strikeouts to five walks. She limited the Buckeyes to just four hits on the night, propelling Wisconsin to the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday.

No. 8 seed Indiana defeated No. 9 seed Purdue, 6-3. Hoosiers’ freshman Aly Van Brandt had a solid game, going 2-for-3 at the plate, hitting a triple, and two RBIs. That game was the last game for Wednesday–wrapping up all the first-round games. The tournament is being played on the campus of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

No. 10 seed Minnesota took care of business vs. the Illinois Fighting Illini. The Golden Gophers came out on top, 10-7. Big Ten Player of the Year Jess Oakland tied the Division I record for the most walks in a game in that one, drawing six walks. With the game tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth, Minnesota’s Taylor Krapf was the hero on Wednesday. She blasted a three-run shot to lift the Gophers to a heart-stopping win, punching their tickets to the quarterfinals.
