Jack Miller no longer with Florida Gators football program
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida Gators quarterback Jack Miller is no longer with the football team. Miller graduated from the University of Florida this past fall semester. A transfer from Ohio State, Miller was with the Gators for two seasons but dealt with injuries both years. Miller has two years of eligibility left in college but it remains to be seen if he will continue his football career.

Miller enrolled at Ohio State in 2020 and played in two games, taking a redshirt. He played in just four games as a redshirt freshman in 2021 before transferring to Florida. A thumb injury sidelined him until the bowl game, where he made his first collegiate start for the Gators in the Las Vegas Bowl. He finished that game completing 13-of-22 passes for 180 yards. Richardson left early for the NFL Draft and Miller entered another starting battle. This time it was with a fellow Big Ten evacuee, Graham Mertz. Miller again lost the starting quarterback battle to Mertz heading into the 2023 season.
Miller’s departure leaves the Gators with only two scholarship quarterbacks — Graham Mertz and true freshman D.J. Lagway. Florida hosted a transfer portal quarterback for a visit on Sunday and is actively looking to add another scholarship quarterback to the room.

Mertz returns and, barring injury, will be the Gators’ starter in 2024. Mertz started the first 11 games of the 2023 season before being sidelined for an injury holding him out in the season finale. He finished with career-highs in completions (261), passing yards (2,903), touchdown passes (20), completion percentage (72.9), passing yards per game (263.9) and passing efficiency (157.8) while only throwing three interceptions, marking a career-low and tied his career-best with four rushing scores. Mertz set program records for consecutive passes without an interception (239), consecutive passes completed (19), and season-best completion percentage with 72.9% (261 of 358). He tied for second all-time in UF history with completion percentage in a game (83.3%) on two occasions.
Behind Mertz will be Five-Star Plus+ quarterback DJ Lagway — the highest-rated quarterback Florida has signed since Jeff Driskel. Lagway has been told that he will have an opportunity to play right away and he certainly is viewed as the future of the program. Lagway officially enrolled at Florida this weekend and will begin classes this week.
