It was a busy Sunday in the world of Michigan Wolverines athletics, headlined by the men’s lacrosse team’s 16-4 win over No. 7 Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament championship game.

The 17th-ranked Wolverines booked a trip to the 2024 NCAA Tournament as a result, coming off its second-straight Big Ten Tournament win. They will take on the fifth-seed No. 4-ranked Denver squad in the first round on Saturday, May 11 at 3 p.m. MT at Denver’s Peter Barton Stadium.

Michigan is one of four Big Ten schools in the tournament along with Johns Hopkins, Maryland and Penn State.

The women’s lacrosse team, ranked fifth in the country, claimed its fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament as an at-large bid. They will travel to South Bend on Notre Dame’s campus for the first and second rounds.

U-M will play Mercer on May 10 at 4 p.m. with the winner set to play either Notre Dame or Costal Carolina on May 12 at noon.

Four other Big Ten programs made the field in Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Northwestern and Penn State.

Flipping over to women’s tennis, the third-ranked Wolverines rallied for a 4-2 win over Notre Dame in Ann Arbor to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. U-M will host Miami in the Sweet 16 next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Varsity Tennis Center.

Michigan quote of the day

“We were very clear … when we took the job, there were a lot of open spots, but we were going to try to get a 5 and a 1. Tre [Donaldson] was the first point guard we went after with aggression. We tried to surround him with everyone he knew that was around him and convince him this was the right fit. He had a very high regard for Michigan basketball and this university, and we had some built-in connections through some other guys that had recruited him in the past. We knew some of his friends that spoke highly of us.”
