When Alabama took the field for its annual A-Day spring game last month, Nick Saban found himself in unfamiliar territory. Still donning his traditional red coat, he was in a box alongside Miss Terry on the east side of Bryant Denny Stadium watching Kalen DeBoer coach the Crimson Tide in front of a packed house for the first time.

It gave Saban a unique perspective to watch Alabama debut its new look. It’s safe to say, he liked what he saw.

“I was encouraged,” Saban said ahead of the Irondale Prayer Breakfast. “I thought the team looked well-coached. They played hard. They played with a lot of discipline. I know they’ve got a lot of young players at some positions, so their development’s going to be critical to success. I think they kept pretty good continuity through this last portal, and hopefully, they’ll add some pieces that will help them next fall.”

DeBoer’s offense was one of the best in the country a year ago, and even though offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb headed to the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, some elements remained during A-Day. Jalen Milroe and the offense flew around the field that Saturday in Tuscaloosa, which was perhaps a taste of what’s to come in the fall.

For DeBoer, it was a memorable day, and Saban gave his stamp of approval right away. Of course, the GOAT is still around the program with an office at the stadium – but he and DeBoer might be able to build their relationship away from the field soon.

Both DeBoer and Saban are preparing to play in the Regions Tradition Pro-Am in Birmingham next week, and they could be paired together. While Saban didn’t know about that when speaking with reporters, he continued to speak highly of DeBoer and what he brings to T-Town.

“That’s the first I’ve heard of it,” Saban said with a smile. “But I’d be glad to do it.

“I think he’s doing a really, really good job. He’s a good person. He’s a good man. I think he’s got a good staff. Hopefully, they can keep the continuity of the team together and add some pieces that will help them be successful.”

With spring practice in the books, Alabama will now turn its attention to summer workouts before fall camp begins. Then, it’ll be time for DeBoer to make his debut when the Crimson Tide take on Western Kentucky Aug. 31.
