Florida State must add tight end, defensive tackle depth, Greg McElroy says

Coming off a 13-1 season, Florida State did lose some major pieces and has a few positions on the roster where ESPN analyst Greg McElroy believes the Seminoles should go out and add more bodies.

On a recent episode of his YouTube show, Always College Football, McElroy dove into one spot on each side of the ball, explaining that FSU would be well-served to grab some reinforcements or perhaps a reliable starter even. First, he took a look at the tight end room.

“For Florida State, tight end is the position that you felt like needed to be addressed heading into the spring, and they’ll exit the spring almost assuredly looking for a guy at that position,” said McElroy. Now, he doesn’t hate what the ‘Noles have now, but that group could still use some bolstering.

“Now, you look at what they have, Kyle Morlock is a really solid guy, should be very serviceable. I think he’s a he’s a guy that’s going to be really really solid. You got the young guy coming in, Landen Thomas. But now if you can go get another tight end, that would be really important.”

He sees a lot of value in how the tight end position is used at Florida State, and some added versatility could go along way for head coach Mike Norvell.

“When you look at Mike Norvell’s system, having multiple hybrid players is valuable. You look at how they used Jaheim Bell last year and how often he got involved in the screen game and the the run-after-catch game. Having a tight end that can break you open with the passing game is something that I think they will certainly be looking at.”

“If you want to have a road grader out there as well, terrific, more the merrier for Florida State. Because the more versatility you have on that roster offensively, the more creative Mike Norvell can be, and we know that he is one of the most creative minds in the sport when given the opportunity.”

Perhaps FSU doesn’t need a Brock Bowers superstar pass catcher type, but another piece or two who can come in and fill a different role than the guys who are already on the roster.

Greg McElroy also believes, like many other teams across college football, that Florida State could use more dependable producers along the defensive front.

“Also think they’ll probably look at defensive tackle, too,” he commented, explaining what the Seminoles have vs. what they need at that spot.

“You got Joshua Farmer, who’s in a great spot. I mean, I think, when healthy, he’s got a chance to be an elite player. Darrell Jackson has big upside but we’ll see what happens as he kind of goes on. But I think having depth at that position would be really really important as well.”

DT is probably the toughest position in football to add capable depth. Even in the NFL, playmakers in the middle of the defensive line are hard to come by and the best fetch some pretty massive contracts. Well, with NIL, that’s now often the case in college as well. But McElroy believes FSU needs to step up to the plate and secure another rotation piece there.
