Oklahoma guard Otega Oweh has committed to Kentucky, via the NCAA Transfer Portal. He spent two seasons with the Sooners. Oweh announced the news on Instagram.

This past season, Oweh made 32 appearances and 28 starts. He averaged 11.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game while shooting 49.3% from the field and 37.7% from beyond the arc. In Oklahoma’s season-ending loss to TCU in the Big 12 Tournament, Oweh tallied a team-high 16 points.

It wasn’t the only time Oweh showed off his massive potential in the 2023-24 season. In the Sooners’ 81-69 loss to North Carolina in December, Oweh erupted for a season-high 23 points while shooting 6-10 from the floor and 10-11 from the charity stripe.

In his true freshman season, Oweh averaged 4.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest. According to KSR’s Jack Pilgrim, Oweh visited Kentucky on April 25. Before committing to Kentucky, the 6-foot-5, 215-pound guard also took visits to Oregon (April 19) and Texas A&M (April 23).

Otega Oweh played high school basketball at Blair Academy (NJ), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 76 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Oweh is the third player Kentucky has landed in the transfer portal, joining Amari Williams (Drexel) and Lamont Butler (San Diego State). Oweh will be a part of head coach Mark Pope’s first team at Kentucky. Despite the additions, Kentucky still has a lot of work to do.

Mark Pope carefully creating first roster at Kentucky

Since John Calipari accepted the offer to become Arkansas‘ next head coach, seven Wildcats have entered the transfer portal and three have entered the draft. Further, four of Kentucky’s highly-touted 2024 signees have re-opened their recruitment.

The only player who has not re-opened their recruitment since Kentucky hired Pope is four-star Travis Perry. The program also received a commitment from former top-40 recruit Collin Chandler.

During his introductory press conference on Sunday, Pope addressed how he plans to approach the program’s roster needs.

“We’re talking to all the guys on the current team, all the guys that have been recruited, and just about every single player in the portal right now,” Pope said. “We’re gonna find the guys that fit here the way we play, and the guys that will come here and understand what a gift it is to play here at the University of Kentucky.”
