The 2024 ACC Softball Tournament got underway on Wednesday with a pair of games, with some of the conference’s lower seeds sparring for the right to advance to the quarterfinal round on Thursday.

Boston College and Syracuse led off the action early in the day on Wednesday, with the Eagles snagging a 1-0 win after a hard-fought contest.

It was a pitching duel, to be sure.

There were only six combined hits in the contest, four by Boston College and two by Syracuse. The Orange advanced a runner to second base on three separate occasions but were unable to capitalize with a runner in scoring position.

Boston College scored the game-winning run in the fourth inning. It happened quickly, with a pair of back-to-back doubles. Catcher Hannah Slike led things off, then managed to score when third baseman Nicole Giery also hit a double.

That was enough to advance Boston College to an ACC Softball Tournament meeting with top-seeded Duke on Thursday.

The second game featured a bit more scoring, with Notre Dame beating North Carolina 7-4.

The Tar Heels plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning to get things going, taking full advantage of a trio of walks, including one with the bases loaded, and a costly error. A pair of Fighting Irish home runs in the top of the fourth inning cut into the deficit, but North Carolina immediately answered with another run in the bottom half, making it 4-2.

It wasn’t until the top of the sixth inning when things really started to click for the Fighting Irish and they took charge of the contest. Aided by a costly throwing error, Notre Dame plated five runs in the frame to take a 7-4 lead. The Irish would hang on to advance to the second round.

The win earned Notre Dame a date with 2-seed Florida State on Thursday evening.
