Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffs | Why the Hate? | Dukes breaks it down

Former Colorado running back Sy’Veon Wilkerson has committed to Georgia State. He originally followed Deion Sanders to Boulder from Jackson State.

In the 2023 campaign, Wilkerson played in 11 games and made two starts against Arizona and Utah. The 5-foot-9 sophomore had 53 carries for 190 yards and three touchdowns. Wilkerson’s lone campaign at Colorado was a step backward from his monstrous season at Jackson State.

In his only season with the Tigers, Wilkerson tallied 226 carries for 1,167 yards, nine touchdowns and 5.2 yards per carry. The previous season, Wilkerson played at Delaware State, amassing 220 carries for 848 yards, eight touchdowns and 3.9 yards per carry.

Sy’Veon Wilkerson played high school football at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School (MD), where he was an unranked prospect in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

During his senior year at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, Wilkerson led the school to the WCAC championship behind 1,100 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.

Wilkerson is one of 44 Colorado players who have entered the NCAA Transfer Portal during or since the 2023 campaign. Despite the losses, Colorado boasts the No. 1 spot in On3’s Transfer Portal Team Rankings.

Deion Sanders not worried about transfer portal losses

While many fans have panicked about Colorado’s substantial losses in the portal, head coach Deion Sanders never worried. Earlier this month, the NFL Hall-of-Famer addressed the program’s substantial transfer departures.

“I wish you guys do a little more homework when you start talking about the portal and understand what we losing, What are we losing? I got time today,” Sanders said. “What are we losing? Potential? Where? You haven’t been watching practice have you? We good. We’re good.

“I trust the recruiting team,” Sanders said. “I trust that coaches and please have some faith in me. We aight. We alright. What happens with the portal man, and you guys need to know, a lot of people are fighting for backups. When a guy is a starter and he transfers you got to really think about that. I mean, is he really that? I don’t know how many starters have really transferred around the country.”
