The 2024 College World Series is set to begin on Friday and as usual, ESPN will broadcast the entire event. A few upgrades have been made though, as the World Wide Leader is set to reveal new cameras and sound technology for their coverage — hoping to make the experience for us watching a home better.

In a release, ESPN discussed five different camera angles they will bring separate from the traditional ones we see in every baseball broadcast. UmpCam has become popular over the years but the umpires at first and second base will also be given bodycam cameras to show viewers their perspective on close plays.

An “Ultra Slo-Mo” camera is being introduced as well. “One to show the relationship between the runners and the ball and one to track action at home plate and along the foul lines,” the release said.

From the audio side, ESPN says around 100 microphones will be placed around the entire ballpark to pick up every sound imaginable from the games.

“To capture the full impact of stadium sounds, ESPN is deploying around 75 mics including RF mics in the bases, buried mics at home plate and the pitcher’s mound, warning track mics spanning the entire outfield wall and even impact mics on the foul poles,” the release said. “With additional commentator mics in the booth and on the field and umpire mics, there will be upwards of 100 microphones available to capture the action in Omaha.”

Whether it’s the pop of a bat from a home run or an outfield banging into the wall while making an incredible catch, some of the sounds should amazing. Crowd noises always present great moments as well.

ESPN is making sure to catch as much as possible with the microphones spread out across Charles Schwab Field Omaha. While the additions might be subtle, there’s no doubt it will add to the experience of what can be a dramatic event.

Fans can get their first look at what ESPN has cooked up, with 1 p.m. CT being the start time of Friday’s matchup between ACC rivals North Carolina and Virginia. Karl Ravech, Eduardo Pérez, Ben McDonald, and Dani Wexelman will have the call from Omaha, likely explaining a lot of the new features.

An exciting week ahead to close out the 2023-2024 college sports calendar.
