The Kansas City Chiefs recently signed veteran quarterback Carson Wentz, and head coach Andy Reid knows the role he’ll play. While speaking to reporters this week, Reid revealed how Wentz will contribute to the team this fall.

“Carson did a nice job when he worked with the Rams, had a nice game actually for them right at the end there,” Reid said. “I welcome him in. We talked to him last year when we were talking to Blaine [Gabbert]. He was holding off for an opportunity possibly to start.

“It was good to get him in this position, and if has an opportunity to play, he has an opportunity to play. We’ll see how it goes, but he’s really handled it well since he’s been here. He’s a good football player. “

Wentz joins the Chiefs after spending the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Rams. He signed with the Rams in November and started the regular season finale against the 49ers. In the game, Wentz completed 17 of his 24 passes for 163 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Carson Wentz’s NFL career is one of a kind

The NFL journey for Wentz has been interesting. He was selected No. 2 overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016 and had an MVP-type season in 2017 before suffering a torn ACL towards the end of the year. Nick Foles took over at quarterback, and the Eagles went on to win the Super Bowl.

Wentz returned as the starter but could not regain what he had in 2017. He was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in 2021 and was with the team for one season before being traded to the Washington Commanders in 2022. Wentz was cut from Washington following the 2022 season.

After signing with the Chiefs Wentz talked about why he signed with the team, which was the experience Foles had. “I remember all the good things he had to say about his time here,” he said, per ESPN. “He absolutely loved it. He loved working with those guys, and those things he said to me back then definitely still rang true in my head as I was making this decision.

“I just remember all the positive things he said about the organization, coaches. … Those things were definitely a factor and gave me a little more peace and comfort in knowing what I was getting into.”

Wentz will be the backup QB for Patrick Mahomes who has led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl wins in five seasons. Mahomes is also a three-time Super Bowl MVP and a two-time NFL MVP.
