Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan wasn’t pleased with Will Levis after the second-year quarterback committed an untimely turnover in the second quarter of Sunday’s Week 2 home game against the New York Jets.

On 3rd and goal inside the 10-yard line, Levis tripped over a Jet defender after stepping up in the pocket. As Levis was falling to the ground, he threw an ill-advised underhanded backwards pass to running back Tyjae Spears, who couldn’t get ahold of it. The Jets scooped up the ball to record the turnover. After the play, Callahan said to Levis, “Hey, what the fu*k are you doing?”

Levis is not off to a promising start under the new regime led by Callahan, as his turnovers continue to hurt his team. He committed a similar mistake last Sunday against the Chicago Bears, throwing a pick-six as he was falling down. Tennessee squandered that game, and Levis’ latest mistake resulted in at least three points staying off the scoreboard.

Will Levis going through more NFL growing pains

Callahan experienced the growing pains of Joe Burrow in Cincinnati and is now learning to roll with them again with Levis. Eventually, those mistakes will have to be limited if Tennessee has any aspiration of being competitive in the AFC South.

“[Burrow] was very similar,” Callahan said last week of Levis. “He would hold the ball, take unnecessary risks, take a lot of hits early in his career. And he learned very quickly that that’s not a sustainable way to play football. You keep trying to get guys to understand the message. And at some point, it clicks and makes sense, and the light bulb goes on.”
