Alabama defensive back Tony Mitchell enters NCAA transfer portal
Alabama defensive back Tony Mitchell has entered the NCAA transfer portal, sources tell BamaOnLine. Mitchell is the fourth Crimson Tide player to transfer in the spring window.
Mitchell, a sophomore, appeared in seven games as a freshman at Alabama in 2023 and recorded one tackle in the Tide’s opener against Middle Tennessee. The Alabaster, Alabama native saw the field on special teams and as a reserve on defense during his first year at UA.
After refuting a report that he was going to enter the transfer portal earlier this month, Mitchell officially showed up on the final day of the 15-day spring window. This came after Alabama’s 15 spring practices, which saw him work with a support strip on his hamstring for most, if not, all of them. Mitchell did not appear in the A-Day Game earlier this month.
A former 4-star recruit out of Thompson High School, Mitchell was considered the 116th-best recruit in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder was also the No. 10 safety and the No. 12 player from the state of Alabama in the cycle. He ultimately chose to commit to the Tide over Auburn, Georgia and Texas A&M.
Mitchell is now the fourth Alabama player to transfer after spring drills – and the second defensive back in as many days. With the departures of Mitchell and Peyton Woodyard and the addition of Charlotte transfer Kameron Howard, the Tide’s safety room now has seven scholarship players, while the 2024 team is currently under the 85-scholarship limit.
