AUBURN — Auburn redshirt freshman defensive lineman Brenton Williams has entered the transfer portal.

Williams is from Opelika, Ala. He played in two games during his true freshman season of 2023. He is a former Coastal Carolina commit before becoming a late bloomer in the recruiting process. Not highly ranked, Williams was viewed as a sleeper prospect in the 2023 class.

He had 55 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and four sacks his senior season in high school. Williams was a 3-star and Top-60 defensive line prospect nationally.

Impact of Brenton Williams’ decision on Auburn’s roster

Williams, standing 6’3 and 245 pounds, was working into the rotation at the “Buck” position behind Jalen McLeod, while competing with true freshman Jamonta Waller during spring camp. With the addition of Waller, Williams was potentially going to be third string at the position entering the fall. Williams’ decision certainly impacts depth, but it doesn’t necessarily impact the overall ceiling of Auburn’s defense in 2024. Impact of Williams’ departure: Minimal
