Georgia landed a surprise commitment on Monday. The Bulldogs are typically up to something we don’t know about behind the scenes and it was brought to light when Brunswick (Brunswick, Ga.) offensive tackle Jamal Meriweather flipped his pledge from UCF to Georgia.

Most of the recruiting industry didn’t know Meriweather even had an offer from the Bulldogs until Monday. He has offers from Coastal Carolina, Tennessee, and USC as well.

The On3 in-house rankings view Meriweather as the nation’s No. 252 overall prospect and No. 17 offensive tackle. He’s the No. 24 player in Georgia per those rankings.

The On3 Consensus rankings, which take into account the assessments of three other outlets, have him ranked 747 overall and No. 47 at his position.

Georgia is now up to three offensive tackle commitments in the 2022 class. It has four-star prospects Monroe Freeling and Bo Hughley, who continues to look around in his recruitment. They also have pledges from interior offensive linemen Kelton Smith, a four-star prospect, and Joshua Miller, a three-star prospect.

Stacy Searels group could lose three starters of the 2022 squad. Warren McClendon is draft eligible with two years of eligibility at right tackle. He is in his third season as a starter. Broderick Jones is in his first season as a starter at left tackle but he’s a redshirt sophomore who can leave. Starting center Sedrick Van Pran, now in his second season as a starter, is in the same boat as Jones.

Georgia currently has the nation’s No. 2 overall recruiting class in the Class of 2023. Meriweather is the 23rd commitment for Georgia in the current cycle and the second this week. Georgia added On3 Consensus five-star EDGE Samuel M’Pemba on Sunday.

The first day of the NCAA’s Early Signing Period will be Wednesday, December 21. The traditional National Signing Day will on the first Wednesday in February.
