Michigan State lands former Cincinnati EDGE Tyler Gillison via portal

East Lansing, Mich. Michigan State received a transfer portal commitment from former Cincinnati EDGE Tyler Gillison on Monday. Gillison announced his commitment via social media. 

Gillison was the No. 943 player and No. 93 defensive lineman in the portal, per the On3 Industry Transfer Portal Rankings. He has three years of eligbility remaining.

Gillison, a redshirt sophomore, is the younger brother of former Spartan tight end Trenton Gillison. The elder Gillison played at Michigan State from 2018-21 before transferring to Youngstown State and again to Tennessee State.

The younger Gillison played in 10 games for the Bearcats last season. He totaled 15 tackles (2.5 for a loss) and a pass deflection while playing both outside linebacker and defensive end in a reserve role. 

Gillison (6-4, 242) redshirted the prior season – his first at Cincinnati – and did not appear in any games. 

A former three-star recruit out of Pickerington (Ohio) Central High School, Gillison was the No. 1029 player in the 2022 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings. He was also the No. 113 defensive lineman and No. 31 player from Ohio in his class. 

The Pickerington, Ohio, native committed to Cincinnati over offers from West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Marshall and Miami (Ohio), among others, out of high school. 

Gillison joins a Michigan State transfer class that includes former UMass running back Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams, former Indiana defensive end Anthony Jones, former Arizona State cornerback Ed Woods and former Illinois offensive lineman Andrew Dennis.
