NC State’s transfer portal craziness continued with a commitment from Duke running back Jordan Waters on Monday afternoon.

Waters, the No. 3 running back in the transfer portal, has one year of eligibility remaining. With Waters’ commitment, the Pack has landed the No. 1 tight end (Justin Joly), No. 4 center (Zeke Correll), No. 16 quarterback (Grayson McCall), No. 24 wide receiver (Wesley Grimes), and one of the top running backs available to bolster its offense for the 2024 campaign.

The Fairmont, N.C., native was the Blue Devils’ leading rusher this past fall with 142 carries for 753 yards and 12 touchdowns. He led the ACC with the most scores on the ground with his dozen trips to the end zone this season.

Waters was an effective runner for Duke, and he posted three 100-plus rushing yard games this season — one of which came against NC State. Waters used 13 carries to run for 123 yards and a touchdown against the Wolfpack as the Blue Devils downed the red and white 24-3 in mid-October.

While Waters ran for his season-most yards against NC State, 83 of them came on one carry, which was the final explosive touchdown play that the Pack allowed the rest of the season.

Waters will make the short drive from Durham to Raleigh after spending five years with the Blue Devils. He played in 50 career games and rushed for 1,624 yards with 23 touchdowns on 322 carries. Waters also totaled 30 receptions for 305 yards and a touchdown as a receiving back.

This past season was a career-best for Waters, who rushed for the most yards in his collegiate career and added the highest total of receiving yards in his Duke tenure. Waters’ previous career-best was 566 yards on 123 carries last season, his first fall as a true workhorse back for the Blue Devils.

Before he arrived at Duke, Waters was a standout offensive player at Fairmont High School. He totaled more than 2,300 yards of offense with 29 touchdowns as a senior. He threw for 827 yards and six scores, while he rushed for 1,227 yards and 20 touchdowns. Waters also caught 75 passes for 976 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior.

Waters graduated with a sociology degree and a minor in psychology from Duke in May 2023.

Based on TheWolfpacker.com’s count, the running back’s decision to transfer brings NC State up to 82 scholarships for the 2024 season once the 22 Wolfpack prep commits officially join the program.
