Tennessee Baseball Tony Vitello Details 4-1 Win Over South Carolina

The Tennessee baseball team is once again champions of the Southeastern Conference for regular season baseball action.

With the 4-1 win over South Carolina in game three on Saturday, coupled with Vanderbilt’s 12-4 win over Kentucky, the two teams finish the conference slate with 22-8 records. Since Tennessee won the regular season series over the Wildcats two games to one back in April, UT owns the tiebreaker and will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala. However, Tennessee and Kentucky are co-champions of the SEC for regular season play.

It’s the fifth conference championship for Tennessee in program history and the first since 2022. Saturday’s events also secured the ninth SEC East Divisional title in program history, the first again since 2022. The Vols win the East during its final year of existence as divisions will go away next year when the conference welcomes Texas and Oklahoma to expand to 16 teams.

The Vols will be looking to secure their fifth ever SEC Tournament championship in their 20th appearance in Hoover and only the second as the No. 1 seed in its current format. Tennessee has now won the SEC East title for the third time in the past four seasons. Prior to Tony Vitello’s tenure, it’s also the first SEC regular season and East Division title since the 1997 season, when they were co-champs.

Since the Volunteers are the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, Tennessee will open play in the afternoon session on Wednesday in Hoover – around 5:30 pm eastern time for the third game of the day. The Wednesday contest will be televised on the SEC Network.

Tennessee concludes the 2024 regular season with a 46-10 overall record and 22-8 tally in conference play. The Vols won their last nine conference series in-a-row and have only lost games in back-to-back fashion one time this season, back on March 16-17 at Alabama.
