Shedeur Sanders odds to be No. 1 overall pick in 2025 NFL Draft plummet after single tweet
Following a tweet from Shedeur Sanders, the Colorado quarterback’s odds to go No. 1 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft fell Wednesday.
Sanders called out defensive back transfer Xavier Smith, who left prior to the 2023 campaign. It came on the heels of an Athletic story on the departed Colorado players following Deion Sanders’ arrival.
Since the tweet came off pretty negative in the eyes of social media, Shedeur Sanders’ odds of +100 to go No. 1 overall dropped, per DraftKings.
Sanders’ odds dropped to +300 to be the top selection next year. Still, he has the shortest odds to go in the top spot in the draft.
He’s ahead of other quarterbacks such as Carson Beck (Georgia) and Quinn Ewers (Texas).
Last season, Sanders put up big numbers in 11 games despite being battered and sacked over 50 times in the fall. He had 3,230 yards, 27 touchdowns, three interceptions and a 69.3% completion percentage.
As a member of the Class of 2021, Sanders was a three-star recruit out of Cedar Hill (Texas) Trinity Christian School, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 60 overall prospect in the state, the No. 33 quarterback in the class and the No. 411 overall prospect in the class when he committed to Jackson State.
So what led to Sanders’ tweet this week? Smith claimed head coach Deion Sanders could’ve used more compassion when making roster changes.
Whether that’d be outright cutting players or encouraging them to enter the transfer portal, Smith felt he didn’t get his fair shot.
Upon seeing quotes on a graphic from The Athletic on social media, Shedeur Sanders responded.
“(I don’t) even remember him (to be honest),” Sanders wrote on Twitter. “Bro had to be very mid at best.”
The conversation the following spring was allegedly not pleasant for Smith, which led him to the portal.
“We sat on the sofa, and he’s talking to us, but he’s not even looking at us,” Smith said, via The Athletic. “I’m looking Coach Kelly dead in his eyes. (Sanders) said he felt like I should hit the portal. He didn’t want me to waste a year thinking I could earn a spot. I was actually getting mad, like tears coming to my eyes. Because, bro, you never even tried to get to know me.
“He was destroying guys’ confidence and belief in themselves. The way he did it, it could’ve been done with a little more compassion.”
