Cam Akers shocked the football world on Thursday. After suffering a torn Achilles in July, the Los Angeles Rams running back was designated to return of the injured reserve.

“LA Rams Transactions: Designated for Return RB Cam Akers,” tweeted the Rams, breaking the news that surprised everyone.

In July, the news of Akers’ injury devastated the team. After a slow start to his rookie season, the former Florida State star found his groove over the second half of his introduction to the NFL. Going into his sophomore season, many expected a huge breakout in an exciting offense.

Originally, there was hope the Rams could see Akers return for the team’s post-season run. However, an Achilles tear is one of the hardest injuries for any football player to comeback from. That’s multiplied tenfold when you’re a running back.

After a small hiccup, the Rams have found their footing once again. In contention with the Arizona Cardinals for the NFC West crown, the return of Cam Akers will only aid Los Angeles in their quest.

More on Cam Akers, Los Angeles Rams

Cam Akers ended his rookie season with 625 yards and two touchdowns, but it was how he ended his season that had Rams faithful ecstatic. After finding his footing at the end of the regular season, Akers had playoff performances that cemented him as the Rams top option at running back.

In two games against the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers, Akers rushed 46 times. In all, the former Florida State star accumulated 221 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. At a time where the Rams were getting uneven play from their quarterback, Akers was a steadying presence.

Now, the Rams have immense potential with Matt Stafford starting at quarterback. Cam Akers may provide the push they need to get over the hump.
