Report: Two teams emerge as contenders to sign Jarvis Landry

Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry was cut by the organization on Monday, leaving him free to sign with whatever team he desired. Originally, Landry was going to be able to seek a trade but Cleveland decided to just cut ties after four seasons together.

Later in the day, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported there are two teams that have expressed the most interest — the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints. Two teams hoping to contend in their respective conferences next season, Landry will have a couple of solid options to choose from in the coming days.

Adding Landry would bring another exciting element to an already exciting offense for Kansas City. Led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce is one of the best duos in the league, regardless of position. Adding a Pro Bowl-caliber receiver such as Landry would give the Chiefs a quite impressive third option.

As for New Orleans, they are attempting to rework the offense in more than just one way. The quarterback situation is not fully figured out but based on reports, Deshaun Watson could be an option through the trade market. New head coach Dennis Allen will be retaining Pete Carmichael as the offensive coordinator, trying to keep pace with Tampa Bay in the NFC South.

The situation with Michael Thomas remains unclear as well, with New Orleans desperately needing wide receiver help after Marquez Callaway was their top pass catcher with less than 700 yards. Although the move would send Landry over to the NFC for the first time in his career, it would instant boost the Saints’ offense.

Landry struggled last season with Cleveland, having 52 receptions for 570 yards and two touchdowns in just 12 games. Originally paired with Odell Beckham Jr., the wide receiver duo became frustrated with the Browns’ situation. Beckham Jr. was able to get out during the season and win the Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams. Landry will try to replicate his former partner in crime by signing with a new team.

Landry was originally a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft of the Miami Dolphins, going No. 63 overall. Since then, he has only made the playoffs twice in his career. Cleveland was able to get by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2020 before falling just short the Kansas City in the Divisional Round, while Miami lost in the 2016 Wild Card Round to Pittsburgh.
