Dak Prescott praises Cedrick Wilson as Wilson's role in the offense grows
The Dallas Cowboys lost wide receiver Michael Gallup to a calf injury in last Thursday’s season opening to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gallup is likely to miss multiple weeks. In his absence, third year wideout Cedrick Wilson is in line for more of a role on the Cowboys offense. Quarterback Dak Prescott is high on Wilson and thinks that he will seamlessly transition into the larger role.
Gallup was the Cowboys’ third receiver behind Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb. He caught four passes for 36 yards before suffering the injury. Now, Wilson will look to help offset Gallup’s loss. Prescott doesn’t expect any drop-off as Wilson’s role increases.
“He’s a great receiver and he’s gonna be a great receiver for a long time,” Prescott said of Wilson, via The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “He’s probably one of our best prepared receivers. He was once a QB so he kinda sees the game from that perspective as well.”
Wilson’s role so far with the Cowboys has largely been on special teams
Wilson played two seasons at Boise State prior to starting his NFL career. In 2016, he caught 56 passes for 1,129 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging 20.2 yards per reception. In 2017, Wilson caught 83 passes for 1,511 yards and seven touchdowns. Wilson returned 31 kicks in his collegiate career with an average return of 23.9 yards. He also averaged 13.2 yards on 10 punt returns.
The Cowboys drafted Wilson 208th overall in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. So far, Wilson has appeared in 23 NFL games, including week one against Tampa Bay. He has 25 receptions on 39 targets with 259 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson also has a passing touchdown. He has returned eight punts and three kickoffs.

The Cowboys offense has yet to be at full strength
In week one, the Cowboys were without All-Pro right guard Zack Martin due to COVID-19 protocols. Martin is cleared to return for week two, but starting right tackle La’el Collins has been suspended five games for a violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy. On Thursday, reserve lineman Ty Nsekhe was hospitalized due to a heat related incident, and he will miss Sunday’s game.
Dak Prescott attempted 58 passes in week one. He threw for 403 yards and three touchdowns. The Cowboys only had 18 rushing attempts. Dallas does not have a strong defense, so the offense’s ability to put up points consistently will be vital. Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb might have had huge games in week one, each with at least seven receptions and 104 yards.
But if week one was any indication, there will be plenty more targets to go around in a high-powered passing attack. Wilson caught three passes for 24 yards in week one, and he likely needs to do more to solidify his role on the Cowboys offense.
