Deshaun Watson to sit with Texans, Tyrod Taylor announced as QB1

As it pertains to Deshaun Watson, the Houston Texans confirmed all speculation. Announced today, their star quarterback will sit to begin the 2021 season. 

Tyrod Taylor will be the Texans starting quarterback, according to Texans head coach David Culley.

“Tyrod Taylor will start for us at quarterback for sure,” Culley said today in a press conference. “He will start for us.”

Continuing, Culley elaborated as to what Taylor brings to the table as the starting quarterback for Houston.

“Not a very vocal guy, but first guy in, last one to leave,” Culley said of the former Virginia Tech quarterback. “ I have seen him a little bit more vocal going into (his) 11th year, more vocal than he has been. I think those experiences have helped him be in position to lead our football team.”

While Taylor has taken advantage of the opportunity, it exists due to a combination of Watson wanting out of the organization, and the allegations against the quarterback. Evidently, Watson will remain on the Texans roster, waiting for a resolution to his issues.

Behind Taylor, Houston has Davis Mills listed as the backup quarterback. Earlier this year, the Texans drafted Mills in the fourth round of the NFL Draft, the 67th overall selection out of Stanford.

Deshaun Watson trade: Texans ‘willing to wait’

When he was hired by the Texans, Culley knew he was waltzing into a volatile situation. As he looks to steady the ship with Taylor at quarterback, rumors persist of a Watson trade being imminent

However, the Texans are biding their time. Amidst the controversy surrounding their star quarterback, the franchise is willing to see things through.

“The Texans were willing, and are willing to listen to offers for Deshaun Watson. But the price is going to be high,” said NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. “Three first-round picks and more, at least.

“The price has not changed. The Texans stance has not changed. If they don’t get the price that they want, then they are willing to wait.”

Evidently, a trade doesn’t seem like something that’s happening as quickly as Watson may prefer. Still, the possibility remains on the table for the former Clemson star.

Continuing, Pelissero mentions that teams prefer that Watson remains with Houston while he resolves his off the field issues. Moreover, he states that we could wait until spring 2022 before a Watson trade materializes.

“There are teams that would prefer, perhaps Watson’s availabile come 2022, that the Texans hold him in one way or another on the roster this season,” said Pelissero. “Whether he’s playing or not. 

“And would maybe like to make a move next spring, when some of the other things off the field and the serious legal situation have been resolved.”

The Houston Texans may still have Deshaun Watson on their roster, but it’s evident they’ve moved on.
