Devin Smith reunites with Urban Meyer, makes incredible catch

Former Ohio State wide receiver Devin Smith reunited with old college coach, Urban Meyer yesterday. And earlier today, he made a spectacular catch for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Look at him lay out for the spectacular grab below, full extension.

Smith bobbled the ball as he went to the ground, but the play was ruled a catch by officials in the game. Regardless, it was an incredible play by the former Buckeye.

The catch was a 45-yard strike from Jaguars backup quarterback C.J. Beathard. As John Shipley, beat writer for the Jacksonville Jaguars noted on Twitter, “Devin Smith has been a Jaguar for like 26 hours.”

What a play.

Devin Smith NFL Career

Smith has played sparingly in the NFL over the past six seasons, but he’s demonstrated big play ability in flashes. He started three games with the New York Jets in 2015 and started two games with the Dallas Cowboys in 2019.

In his NFL career, he’s hauled in 15 catches for 248 yards and two touchdowns. His longest catch thus far was a 51 yard catch in 2019 with the Dallas Cowboys.

Devin Smith finished his career as one of the greatest receivers to ever suit up in Ohio State football history. He currently ranks fifth all-time in career receiving yards (2,503).

As a junior at Ohio State, Smith hauled in 44 catches for 660 yards and eight touchdowns. He earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors for that season.

His senior year in 2014, he hauled in 33 catches for 931 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Akron, Ohio native averaged 28.2 yards per catch, demonstrating his ability as one of the best deep threats in Buckeye football history.

In the 2014 Big Ten Championship game, Smith caught four balls for 137 yards and three touchdowns, helping to guide the Buckeyes to a resounding 59-0 victory over Wisconsin. In the 2015 Sugar Bowl against Alabama, he snagged two catches for 87 yards, including one touchdown.

The Buckeyes upset Alabama 42-35 in the contest and Smith had the 47-yard touchdown catch from Cardale Jones that put Ohio State up for good early in the third quarter. In the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship victory against Oregon, Smith hauled in one catch for 45 yards.

Smith was an incredible athlete coming out of high school, he was the Ohio state champion in the long jump (24 feet, 7 inches). He also won the Ohio state championship in the 100 meter dash (10.56 seconds). He attended Massillon Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio. In his entire high school football career, he snagged 110 catches for 2,119 and 24 touchdowns (second-best in school history).
