Colts head coach on Sam Ehlinger, Jacob Eason splitting first-team reps
Sam Ehlinger and Jacob Eason are splitting first-team quarterback reps at training camp for the Indianapolis Colts. The team’s head coach, Frank Reich, spoke on the quarterback situation as the Colts for stability behind the injured Carson Wentz.
“It wasn’t anything with Jacob doing anything wrong,” Reich said, per Colts.com. “This is meritocracy, and Sam’s looked good. So we decided to split it up”
While Eason was getting the bulk of first-team reps after the news of Wentz’ injury, Ehlinger’s solid play forced Reich’s hand. Instead of sulking, Eason impressed Reich by the way he handled the new partnership.
“I was proud of the way both guys responded today, particularly Jacob, right, because he gets the news that hey, all of a sudden you’re going to split the reps and he comes out and has a good day,” Reich said. “That’s a good sign for Jacob.”
In addition, Reich isn’t rushing to name the Colts starter for Week 1. Meanwhile, Eason will start Sunday’s preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers. Still, Ehlinger is pushing the former Georgia and Washington quarterback to the limit.
As the Indianapolis quarterback battle continues, Reich believes we’ll see continued progress from both quarterbacks, no matter what unit they’re practicing with.
“Sam’s really been good, he’s been solid every day,” Reich said. “And so it’s fair, it’s right. By switching those, I don’t feel like we’re losing that much with Jacob getting reps with the two’s, it’s more about giving Sam an opportunity.”
If the former Texas Longhorns quarterback can beat out Eason, he could join Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson as rookie quarterbacks starting Week 1. While Wentz is on track to start the opener, a set back could lead to Ehlinger being a surprise start. Nevertheless, his experience leading Texas will come in handy.

Sam Ehlinger vs. Jacob Eason: An Unlikely QB Competition
First, Eason has always had the physical tools. It’s what made him one of the most sought after quarterbacks in the nation coming into his college career. Still, his decision making has held Eason back. The Colts took a flyer on him in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
On the other hand, Ehlinger’s potential as a NFL quarterback has always been debated. While many have praised his leadership and athletic ability, his countless question marks led to him falling to the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Could the Colts have an absolute steal on their hands?
After the Colts traded for Wentz, nobody expected a quarterback battle between Eason and Ehlinger would be one of the summer’s juiciest storylines. Heck, many believe the Colts will trade for Nick Foles, or even bring Phillip Rivers out of retirement if Wentz can’t go.
Even with the spirit of competition, the vibes are good in Indianapolis. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Wentz is trending towards playing Week 1. Nevertheless, the battle to be the next man up wages on.
By and large, Reich’s comments lend credence to the Colts’ confidence in the two young quarterbacks. For those that believe the preseason doesn’t matter, sit back, relax and watch Eason and Ehlinger battle for possible playing time.
