Jerry Jones reacts to Dallas Cowboys special teams
Jerry Jones pays close attention to special teams, apparently.
It’s safe to assume the Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager was pleased with how his unit finished Sunday’s 20-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. Kicker Greg Zuerlein connected on a a 56-yard field goal to give Dallas a key road victory against a highly-talented AFC opponent.
Earlier in the game, the Cowboys attempted to block a chargers punt on fourth-and-20. The result? Dallas was given a roughing the punter penalty which led to an automatic first down for Justin Herbert and company.
Jerry Jones special teams philosophy
On Tuesday, Jones revealed he prefers a more conservative approach to special teams all around.
“To be very candid with you, I’m a little more conservative,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan, via the Dallas Morning News.
We won a national championship with special teams when I was in college. So, I’m a fanatical special teams interested fan, whatever. I do believe that the turnovers or the bad plays in the kicking game are the equivalent of turnovers. They usually change possession and can change field position. I really like to choose my spots on taking those kind of risks.”
Cowboys special teams coordinator John Fassel believed Dallas fans wanted the aggressive approach.
“The thought process was I think Cowboys fans aren’t the play-it-safe type,” Fassel said. “So I was going to give them what they wanted, come after [them] on the punt rush. So I hope they’re happy with it. We came after him. [That’s] kind of the mind-set going into the game: We’re going to come after this football. But I’m still not so sure we actually roughed him.”

Jerry Jones praises Cowboys running back duo
After an impressive offensive performance by the duo of Tony Pollard and Ezekiel Elliott, Jones weighed in on the running back situation in Dallas.
“I see it as a great asset to this team,” Jones said during his weekly radio interview at 105.3 The Fan . “You don’t have an issue. We can have more carries or more touches by the running back, and in my opinion, will. Because both the players are outstanding out of the backfield as receivers, and quite a threat. When you see (Kellen) Moore, our coordinator, doing the job he did to neutralize (the Chargers) defense, you see what getting the ball out quick, getting the ball outside to those backs can do.”
Whether its special teams or the running back room, the longtime Cowboys owner still keeps close tabs on every position group.
