New Orleans Saints players react to Marshon Lattimore contract

The New Orleans Saints have agreed to a five-year, $97.6 million extension with cornerback Marshon Lattimore, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport. The deal comes with $44 million fully guaranteed and $68.3 million in total guarantees. Rapaport adds that Lattimore can make up to $100 million over the course of the deal.

The new contract also provides Lattimore the most guaranteed money of any defensive back in NFL history and makes him the envy of the locker room. Saints teammates Cameron Jordan and Michael Thomas reacted to the Marshon Lattimore contract news on social media with different tones.

“Oh laaawd!!!” Jordan posted with a gif from Family Matters. “It’s all making sense!!! Uuuuhhhhh with that guaranteed $$$!!!  Can I get a hot tub!!!!!”

Thomas, a fellow Ohio State alumnus, kept it much simpler, posting “paid” in response to the full contract details ESPN’s Adam Schefter put out.

Marshon Lattimore is a three-time Pro Bowler and won the 2017 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year. He has recorded 10 interceptions over his first four NFL seasons. In addition, he opened his fifth year with three tackles in a 38-3 win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Bad news for Marshon Lattimore

Marshon Lattimore suffered a broken thumb during Sunday’s season opener against the Green Bay Packers, according to Pro Football Talk. The report also indicates that Lattimore will have surgery to repair the injury. This rules him out for an unspecified amount of time.

The news comes shortly after a dominant 38-3 over defending MVP Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. Lattimore finished Sunday with three tackles, a pass deflection and a sizable bank deposit. Between the game and the injury announcement, NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport also reported that Marshon Lattimore agreed the five-year extension with the Saints, much to his teammates satisfaction.

According to The Athletic’s Katherine Terrell, the terms of the contract were agreed prior to kickoff.

Entering the season, the Saints were in dire need to find help at corner for this season. They brought in veteran Bradley Roby before the start of the regular season to patch holes left by departing defensive backs Janoris Jenkins and Patrick Robinson. Roby will play a big role after he finishes his suspension. The new face in the locker room will battle with Paulson Adebo, who had an impressive debut to his rookie campaign. Roby will also join recently acquired Desmond Trufant and Ken Crawley, who are also vying for the other starting corner position. C.J. Gardner-Johnson is listed as a safety but also does a lot of the team’s lifting at the nickel corner spot.
