Despite ongoing rumors about Joe Brady and a potential return to college football, according to Adam Schefter, the fired Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator “wants to stay” in the NFL.

Multiple sources told Schefter that NFL teams have contacted Brady who was a contender for even bigger jobs with the Jets, Falcons and Dolphins a year ago. However, his report did not reveal which teams have been in contact.

As the Panthers head into battle versus Atlanta on Sunday, former offensive assistant Jeff Nixon will lead the unit.

Brady, 32, played a significant role in LSU’s stellar season in 2019. He helped standout quarterback Joe Burrow become the nation’s all-time passer in a single season. The Tigers went undefeated and won the College Football Playoff national championship.

Following his successful run in Baton Rouge, Brady took his talents to the NFL. As Carolina’s offensive coordinator in 2020, he led the squad to a 21st place finish in overall offense. The former Broyles Award winner was let go by Panthers’ head coach Matt Rhule on Sunday, which was a stunning move to many.

Last week, reports surfaced that there was mutual interest between Joe Brady and Mario Cristobal at Miami.

Matt Rhule on firing Joe Brady

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule made his first public comments on Monday after firing offensive coordinator Joe Brady.

Rhule said Brady was a “great young coach” and “consummate professional.”

“I decided to be bold, and step outside my comfort zone,” Rhule said. He also noted that he doesn’t view the hire as a mistake.

Brady’s offense with the Panthers has struggled this season. Carolina ranks bottom five with 308.7 yards, 197.4 passing yards per game and in the bottom half of the NFL with 19.7 points per game.

The Panthers started strong, but once quarterback Sam Darnold began to struggle, it all went downhill. Carolina is 5-7 on the season and coming off of a 33-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
