Indianapolis Colts offensive lineman Ryan Kelly and his wife Emma dealt with the unthinkable two weeks ago.

They lost their daughter, whom they planned to name Mary Kate, at 19 weeks old.

“I learned her little heart just stopped for reasons unknown on Wednesday afternoon after rushing to the hospital upon discovering a little bleeding,” Emma Kelly shared. “After learning she wasn’t with us anymore, I was told there was no other choice but to deliver our baby next.”

The former Alabama standout returned to the team facility this week and took questions from the media.

Before diving into questioning, Kelly read a statement to give thanks to those who helped them through the pain. The Colts lineman asked reporters to stick to football questions after.

“For 24 hours, I watched and held my wife’s hand as she labored with our daughter,” Ryan Kelly said. “We didn’t get the later where you get to wrap the baby up and take them home. That wasn’t in God’s plan for our sweet girl. We had to say goodbye.

“It was the hardest thing that either of us has ever, and hopefully will ever, have to go through. But this is about my wife and the rockstar that she is. As I sat in the hospital bed and watched tears roll down her face, she held our daughter with love. A love that I’ve never seen before. The strength that she possesses, I know, transferred over to our daughter who watches over us now. I’ve never been more proud to be her husband.

“In all this pain, we’re truly thankful to have people in our lives that we do. For starters, our closest friends and family who’ve been there every step of the way and never, ever wavered in their love and support for us. To the Irsay family, can’t thank you guys enough. Frank, Chris, David, teammates, the entire Colts organization, who gave us time to heal and always made sure we were taken care of.

“To the doctors and nurses at Community North, who made us feel like our daughter was the only baby in the world who mattered, thank you. You’ll forever be in our family. And lastly, to the thousands of people we’ve never met who’ve shared their stories of loss. Hearing your stories and knowing we’re not alone has brought us light in all of this darkness, thank you.”

Ryan Kelly, a 2016 first-round draft pick out of the University of Alabama, missed the two games for the Colts before returning to the team.
