”UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State (ARL) was recently awarded a $734 million cost-plus-fixed-fee modification to a previously awarded contract by the Naval Sea Systems Command for research, development, engineering, and test and evaluation in support of programs throughout the Department of Defense (DOD) within its core competency areas.

Collectively, ARL has been awarded more than $2.1 billion, the largest research award the University has received to date. The work is expected to be completed by February 2028.

ARL is a key developer of guidance and control technologies for undersea systems and vehicles, accomplishes prototyping of novel power and energy systems, and performs state-of-the-art research in computational fluid dynamics. In addition, ARL leads research programs in the areas of communications, information processing, cybersecurity, electro-optics, and directed energy. ARL operates the Navigation Research and Development Center for the test and evaluation of our nation’s most precise positioning, navigation, and timing systems. ARL is a center of excellence in materials and manufacturing and supports both industry and the U.S. Navy with advanced materials and development of additive manufacturing technologies.“

This is great news. My father moved from Harvard with Dr. Eric Walker when the the Harvard Underwater Lab moved to Penn State in 1945. My Dad retired in 82 and we Assistant Director of ARL and head of Development Engineering. ARL has done a lot of great stuff for the Navy and other industries. We still have several torpedo models and awards around the house that my Dad received, especially the Mark 48.

In my experience, ARL consistently delivers quality work and gives the USG its moneys worth. Their reputation is stellar, and that cannot be said for all universities by any means.

Eric Walker bringing ARL to State College was the most important thing that ever happened to this university. This university will rise or fall based on our STEM programs and ARL gives STEM profs and students some great research opportunites.

“Penn State’s Applied Research Laboratory awarded $99 million U.S. Army contract”

See the link below. From the article:

“UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State (ARL) recently was awarded a $99 million U.S. Army contract for research and analysis support. For more than 20 years, the U.S. Army has partnered with the ARL to supply innovative research for issues related to logistics, intelligence and analysis.

Under the new contract, ARL will deliver research and development in areas ranging from enterprise resource planning to supply and maintenance management systems. ARL will also provide expertise in electronic maneuver warfare, vehicle dominance and unmanned systems. The wide range of skills, special equipment, unique facilities, and expertise supporting other services and agencies provide unique value and opportunity for the U.S. Army to fulfill its national security missions.

The work is expected to be completed by January 2028.”

Smart people. However, $99 MM from the Army versus $734 MM from the Navy. The Navy laughs at the Army.

Navy has a bag man. It's why they get the better recruits. You can't win like that, so you have to play their game.
