See the link below. From the article:

“Livability.com just named State College as one of the best places to live in the Northeast.

Here’s what it said:

Located in the heart of central Pennsylvania, State College, PA, is home to Penn State University’s flagship campus. With nearly 46,000 undergrads, the university literally doubles the size of State College and provides access to the many amenities tied to a world-class academic institution.”

World-class? They aren’t fooling anyone.

It's all fun and games until a frat boy pukes on your begonias.

Having permanently relocated here from lovely Bucks County, PA, I can attest that it is a much more relaxed, laid back, easy going lifestyle here than even little ol' Yardley was. Somewhat less expensive. Good entertainment options. Even Jersey Girl, Beach Loving Wifey is happy with it all. She heads back to see friends and family often enough to get her fill.

My only real complaint is weather-related, but it's really more of an occasional inconvenience than a real issue.

In a few years, we may decide to move to the Charlotte (near family) or HHI area for weather reasons. The relaxed and laid-back benefits will soon be lost with that, however. Maybe if we are off island in the HHI area we can retain some of that.

I've considered retiring there. Seems like a great fit for a retiring Senior. It's removed from the hustle and bustle of SE PA but has enough activities all year round to keep me busy. Not to mention it's a lot safer than my hometown.

I’ve had plenty of time and fun living in big cities (Phila, Dallas, Houston, DC), but very much looking forward to retiring in State College. Already have our retirement house there, which we use plenty now, but looking forward to being a full time resident in Happy Valley.

Been living here since 2002. You're being way too politically correct regarding the weather. The weather stinks. Many of the drivers also stink. Almost no one pulls into an intersection to make a left turn at a light. I'll be in the intersection waiting, look in my mirror and the driver behind me is stopped at the painted line. Annoying!

It’s a great place. Bottom line. Weather??? Were u here for winter? It’s tough in January and February (not this yr). My only complaint is entertainment after dinner. The area needs more theatre, more adult music places, a D&B type place, and yes a casino would fit the bill, too. Otherwise, not much going on after dinner unless you are a student.

Politically correct regarding weather? Interesting take on an innocuous statement about being able to tolerate cold weather for a couple weeks longer than I had been used to doing forever.

I am with you on driving, and I will be less than politically correct when I say this: As far as consistently poor driving goes in and around State College, the Chinese population wins the gold medal. Others, including old men in hats, may challenge now and then, but it's a 1980 USA hockey team vs Russia level upset to dethrone them.

As I used to tell my daughter when teaching her to drive, the more consistent you are, meaning the predictable in a positive way you are, the safer you are. Being predictably unpredictable seems to be the go-to game plan for some foreign student/teacher drivers here. Yimminy.

Echo your thoughts. had a home built in 2019. Retirement plan as well. Best decision I made. For me, so much to do as far as events. Enjoy the biking and hiking. Very clean and safe. Kinda got spoiled when Covid hit. Came to state college in March since I could work remote (I am in HS education) and was able to basically stay through summer.

wish there were some more restaurants (a top end steakhouse would be great, a true Italian place) that I would truly love. Good options but not great.

Been living here since 2004. We really enjoy the area and it has been a great place to raise the kids. There are many retiree's here and it is a very active community, hiking, biking, pickleball, tennis, golf, fishing, boating, camping, etc. There are many walking/biking paths through out the town. With PSU you do get some big city events that come thru like Springsteen, McCartney, and other big names. There used to be great off broadway plays(Jersey Boys, Spamalot, etc) at Eisenhour pre-Covid, hope they come back. The State Theatre brings in some nice groups for a small venue as well(English Beat, Los Lobos, George Winston, Psychedelic Furs, etc). The past several years the weather just flat out sucks(too cold but not much snow) in Jan, Feb, March and I now realize why a lot of these retirees head back south in the winter months(or maybe I am just getting old). Real Estate prices have skyrocketed since Covid, like everywhere else. Most of the restaurants around town are chains as the mom and pop one's seems to have closed up or moved out of town due to the high rents downtown. There is supposed to be a new Italian Restaurant called Figo coming to one of the new high rise apartment buildings(they have a place in Philly). Lots of Microbreweries, Wineries, Distilleries, and Cideries have popped up in the last several years. In a coffee shop downtown, I heard the owner say at one time, when the old people leave State College they get old and die off. The college kids and the active community up here keeps you young!!

Agree on all accounts.
One of the things we have come to really appreciate that we had not thought much about prior to being here permanently is the really terrific community parks system in and around town, and the proximity of some very nice State Parks. Lots of very good options for taking long, scenic walks, doing some easier-level hiking, enjoying nature and serenity, etc. More strenuous options readily available as well.
The winter weather is pretty much more of the same that I've lived in my entire life. While I really do not like the winter cold and precip, being retired I can choose to not go outside and just stay warm inside. The winter sports at PSU ease that inconvenience for me. The extremely brisk walk from the parking lot to Pegula and back on a cold, windy night sure does get the blood flowing! Or freezing. Can't tell most times.

Audit graduate mathematics classes and you’d be as happy as a clam.
Seriously, audit a history of film class, or at least check to see where the class meets. My class back in the day met in Schwab; if this is still the case it’s a simple matter to access the syllabus, find out what’s showing.

Trust me the owner is speaking the truth. Watch my parents retire in the Villages in 95 and experiencing everyone on their street die off is not for me. I'd much rather be surrounded by younger people. It will be very difficult to pull my Jersey Girl wife out of Bucks County but working on the 7 months in State College and 5 in Sarasota might be the ticket.

Good stuff. I definitely don’t foresee any issue with being bored in Happy Valley; will be plenty of options to keep my wife & I busy. I am admittedly a PSU & sports junkie, so part of those options will be season tix for football & hockey (which I already have) and also hoops. Agree that a couple of more restaurant options would be nice.
