He’s not wrong. Closer to home, we saw Jay step away from exalted status at Nova. After the shock wore off, it made perfect sense and I became convinced that Jay would be crazy to ever scratch any future coaching itch. NBA or nothing.

I agree that the college scene is closer to a gold rush and wild Wild West. Who has any confidence the dimwits at the NCAA will ever come close to getting it right.

There will no doubt be more. The money they are paid makes it pretty easy to step away vs the craziness of college sports. Most of these guys are going to be very responsible with their money as opposed to the the players they coach or even many professional athletes who seem to go belly up making millions. He asked my nephew to walk on at UVA after watching him play pickup with the lacrosse team one day. He couldn’t make the schedule work but was impressed with Coach Bennett. My nephew is playing basketball at Stanford this year after graduating from UVA this Spring. Living his dream.

It’s not only the coaches. Many athletic dept. are wondering WTH happened. They are leaving. Inmates are in charge.

BTW, Tony had his contract rewritten, making it easier for him to both receive more at retirement and have a part in picking his successor.

Smart move by Bennett… this way they had to hire one of his assistants. Took care of his staff. I would have done the same thing
I’m seeing this as not being fair to the players, especially the incoming freshmen. Technically they can transfer right away, yeah, but as a practical matter it’s too late. Oh well, they’ll survive and Virginia is a good school. Should be better at mathematics than they are but still a good school.

I get your point, but "fair" no longer applies when it's really all about the money.

….Fair to the players??? Seriously???

It’s a business now. There is no more amateur college athletics.

Bennett likely was thinking about retirement for a while. When push came to shove, with a long season staring right at him, it seems that he couldn‘t give the program the commitment and energy that his job requires.

The players have no binding ties to anything anymore. It’s a free for all and they’ll go wherever provides them with the most cash. Tough to feel bad for the players anymore.

Check out his statement on ESPN… the guy is a quality individual, just like Jay Wright.
