I don’t know. Joe was alright but he wasn’t any sort of a love marriage specialist astrologer or anything.

Joe certainly had a refreshing self depreciating sense of humor. I liked and respected the man, that’s for sure, my only criticism when listening to Joe speak was understanding all of what he was saying. I remember listening to all of Joe's Tuesday Q and A sessions with the media; I’d probably be able to discern and discriminate about 80-90% of what he said; it frustrated me a bit, because he usually spoke with such knowledge, wisdom and humility. I always wanted to catch his every word. Joe had that rough, gravely voice, and a Brooklyn brogue, that was not always understandable, at least to me.

Joe became Penn State's head coach in 1966, my freshman year at University Park. I essentially grew up admiring Joe and listening to everything Joe said. I view him as my mentor even though I never talked to him. He shaped countless lives for good.
When I was at PSU, I knew Joe, Sue and Jay. When Joe spoke at Thon, the BOT, at a PEP rally, the president of the USA, you could hear a pin drop when he walked to the "stage"
He was able to completely capture that audience. And not just about football

You’re speaking for me, as well, and I’m sure for many others.

As a high school player I attended my first PSU game in 66. Returned to see them upset NCST. in 67.....I didn't realize 66 was Joe's first season until many years later. For perspective I attended his last 2 bowl games.
As a young coach, I attended the PSU spring clinic in 71 and visited his last spring practice (reading an article during breakfast about the Sandusky Grand Jury).
I can tell you that at the Atlantic City Coaches Clinic in the 70s and 80s when Joe spoke.....it was standing room only.
Sandusky got a lot of credit for the defense.....but it was Joe who revolutionized the split four defense and laid the groundwork for the 46 defense that Buddy Ryan made famous with the Bears.

Too bad that his reputation will forever remain in the crapper. He could have easily avoided that fate had he been wise, but he traded it all for "409". Karma is a *****.

I'm always reminded of Joe's superior intelligence when he said what he did about leaving CFB to the Switzers and Sherrills of the world. Interesting how that turned out, no? Both of those two have better reputations than Paterno, neither were involved in such an epic scandal.

Thank you for posting this. I am mostly a reader and rarely post, but I have such fond memories of Joe, and as I prepare to send my daughter back for her 3rd year (she’s the 12th over 3 generations from our family), I am writing her a letter to tuck in with her things. This post reminded me to touch on success with honor, and that it’s not always about getting it “right,” but about doing things the right way and success will follow.

With your new position you need to be laser focused on correcting that, no?

How about you ask these people about Coach Paterno's Karma:
Tom Corbett
Frank Fina
John Surma (with Surma at the helm, US Steel's stock value plummeted by 89%)
Jack Raykovitz
Genovese Raykovitz
Laura Ditka
Sara Ganim
Whataboutism seems to be your area of expertise, not mine. The fates of those individuals does not improve the shitheap that is Paterno's reputation.

I don't even know "whataboutism" means and I didn't mention anything about Coach Paterno's reputation. Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?
