I don’t know. But my thoughts:
1. Smith is a good run support safety, but is he a good coverage safety?
2. What really killed the last minute 2nd quarter drive was a FR QB taking 2 sacks.

I tried to pay attention to the little things yesterday, and some things I'm fairly sure of are:
1. We have a number of defenders that are limited in certain facets of the game.
Examples: I think Tillman has trouble reading plays, and is hesitant when he has to do so, frequently taking bad angles or filling the wrong hole or filling it late. However, if you give him a direct assignment like "blitz this gap" he's pretty good.
Blanton can read plays just fine, but he's not fast, so sending him on say, a delayed blitz, is usually a waste.
2. The defensive staff either doesn't know their players well or just can't/won't consistently call plays that minimize the limitations of #1. I'm totally on board with a wholesale replacement on that side of the ball.
3. The offensive playcalling is good...the best since Mullen 2017, but it's still not good enough. There are multiple times every game where we seemingly just go braindead, whether that's running the same play one too many times or asking the offensive line to do something that's obviously too complex for this current unit. The lack of a Hail Mary attempt was another example.
4. Our offensive line was getting stood up in the first quarter, if not shoved back a yard or more, on running plays. By UMass. It's great that we reversed that trend as the game went on, but the last time I remember a lesser opponent doing that to us was during the Croom era.

What bothers me is that Hutzler stayed with Alabama until the semi-final game. He missed many opportunities to recruit players that he desperately needed. We and he are paying for that, this year. If we are not going to fire him, he had better do the work to fix this defense.

I think that’s a little overblown. Im sure he was recruiting for us from the day he was hired. What bothers me was he was never going to be a good DC hire to start with. If you want to give a job to your old friend, hire him a special teams coach.

I'm mostly happy with yesterday's offense's direction, but God help our defense. We need to clean the house on the defensive side of the ball. It's terrible that I forgot we were playing until the second quarter started, and I flipped the channel over to watch it.

Our offense is a work in progress. We just have to hope that nobody leaves at the end of the season.

I watched an interview with Cignetti , IUs coach. He discusses his blueprint for rebuilding Indiana and turning it around in one year. He describes having done it at Elon then James Madison, he describes how many HS players to take, how he targets players in the portal. How he puts together a coaching staff. Lebby should watch it, he would learn much. You can’t teach experience.

We really needed an experienced head coach after firing Arnett. It was easy to see the program was in a very risky situation. Instead we gambled on a 1 st time head coach.

Yep , whatever Your line of work or trade, you can see how a guy who has done something for 20-30 years has seen the same problem from all angles would have a big edge over a guy who has never done it before on any level and is trying to learn on the job. Its compounded by this being a total rebuild. Arnett pretty much stripped it to the foundation.

It's hard to see from my seat, but when there is a terrible officiating call against us, it doesn't seem like Levee is ever in the refs ear? Also, a couple of plays it look like the challenge flag needed to be thrown that we didn't.

1. Taking out Isaac Smith on a lot of 3rd downs.
2. Not throwing a hail mary to end the half.
This one drives me insane. It’s a free freaking play. See what they can do. Why not? If there’s time on the clock, there’s time to score. Its stupid not to utilize these opportunities.

Smith is one of your best athletes. You leave your best on the field.

He was coaching Bama the day he was hired. Are you contrary just to be contrary?
