Grew up close to South Williamsport (which is where the LLWS is REALLY played). My Dad, God rest his soul, faithfully watched the games and would share highlights with me. I confess I wasn't terribly interested in the games, but enjoyed Dad's enthusiasm and sharing.

Strong opening games by Panama and Japan. They threw no hitters in their opening games. Panama did so over the Europe-Africa champ (Czech Republic). Japan did it against Cuba, which is doubly impressive.

PA (Media LL) falls to Texas, 2-1, in their opening game. A combination of some poor D by Media, and some terrific pitching by the starter for TX, were the difference.

Though with calls like this, perhaps it wasn't as tough for Japan to attain a no hitter.

Whats with the play in games seems wierd that two teams have to win 1 more game than the others

Yeah, I'm not a fan of it. It stems from when they expanded the teams that made it to the LLWS. (I forget the year that happened -- some time in the past decade.) It's great for those additional teams. But it forced LL to modify their schedule from a balanced one to an unbalanced one.

As a dad of 4, I can’t tell you how satisfying that was for your father. Kudos to you!

Wow! That was literally a foot outside, and it was a straight pitch with zero movement.
It’s Little League…after coaching for years you learn to not expect much from the umpires. However, I always preferred a big strike zone to a small one….otherwise it’s a walk-a-thon and that sucks worse than getting crushed by a team hitting the ball all over.

The depth of where LL catchers set up makes pitches look further inside and outside. We are accustomed to MLB catchers being right behind the plate. In LL these kids tend to be up to 2 feet further back.

Nice observation, thanks.

I missed the game, but the PA team (Media LL) won their first game in the elimination bracket, 5-3, over a team from Maine.

Their reward is to play an 11 am EDT game on Sunday, against a team from Rhode Island (Metro Regional champs).

The PA Champs, Media LL, had their run at the LLWS come to an end. They lost to Rhode Island, 7-2. The game was tied 2-2 in the 6th (final) inning. In the top of the inning, Rhode Island scored 5 runs (some shaky D by Media, some nice hitting with 2 strikes by RI, etc.)

Based on how they were playing, I though that the Northeast Seattle team would make it to the U.S. Championship game. And they still might -- they'll have to win on Thursday.

The Neadville, Texas team was able to squeak past Northeast Seattle, 1-0

Texas (Needville) will play California (El Segundo) in the LLWS U.S. Championship on Saturday (8/26).

The two teams met earlier in the LLWS, with Needville winning 3-1.

The California team came out of the Elimination bracket and defeated the Texas team in the LLWS U.S. Championship, 6-1. (I've never been a fan of the fact that in all the competitions up till Regionals, if you come out of the Elimination bracket you have to beat the team from the Championship bracket two times to win that tournament. However in the Regional finals, and in the LLWS U.S. Championship, the team from the Elimination bracket only has to defeat the team out of the Championship bracket one time to take the title.)

They'll face Curacao in the LLWS Final on Sunday, as Curacao defeated Taiwan 2-0 in the LLWS International semifinal.

Agree, should have to beat them twice

It doesn’t really matter if the home plate ump calls them just a little bit outside as long as he’s consistent. As both a player and ump in my younger days, I believe that is what’s important.

That’s where you and I differ, I don’t want consistent, I want correct. If they consistently call a ball two feet wide a strike, that’s just consistently being wrong. Definitely error on the side of a bigger strike zone for youth teams, but be reasonable about it.

Agree as well, but as we know tV controls everything. They want the ability to show a final where the winner takes all, not if one team wins we have another game.

California was in total control, with a 5-1 lead in the top of the 5th. But their pitcher felt some tightness in his arm that he couldn't get loose, so the CA team changed pitchers (on a 3-2 count). The hitter got a hit on the 1st pitch to load the bases, and the next batter for Curacao hit a grand slam. So it's 5-5 heading to the bottom of the 5th.

California with a walk-off HR by the lead-off batter in the bottom of the 6th, to win the LLWS, 6-5. An entertaining game, and another great couple of weeks of baseball at Williamsport.

2 feet outside the strike zone isn’t what I meant, but your point is taken.
