Wake me up when the chicks show up in their fancy dresses. Or, preferably, when they take them off.

Thanks Tom - I missed the announcements. Trying my best to see as much as possible because I still enjoy watching the Oscars and seeing creatives I like and admire. Some initial thoughts....

  • Banshees of Inisherin is a movie that still sits with me; love all the performances and my God, the beauty of that island is almost crushing. Manages to be funny and bleak and hopeful and hellish all at once. So far my favorite film of the year (well, might be Top Gun....).
  • Speaking of Top Gun, nice to see the academy find room for it in the Best Picture list (and Best Adapted Screenplay) - hoping this means Cruise and Connelly will show up and look great and maybe have more folks tune in to see them.
  • I think this might be an 'Everything, Everywhere...' sweep though - such a creative and singular film and Michelle Yeoh is a longtime industry favorite. Wouldn't surprise me to see her win Best Actress but pulling hard (not like that, @BobPSU92 !) for Michelle Williams who is long, long overdue.
  • Best Actor is interesting - will be a tight race with Fraser, Farrell, and Butler. Farrell has been quietly doing great work for a number of years and would love to see him rewarded. Fraser is certainly a sentimental favorite and Butler has a bright future ahead of him (Tarantino strikes again!).
  • No nomination for Taylor Swift's original song 'Carolina (Where the Crawdads Sing)'? WTF?! She was robbed for Hunger Games and 'Beautiful Ghosts' was the only good thing about Cats. C'mon! I wanted to see Taylor on the red carpet!
  • Ana de Armas is a surprise but she has strong red carpet game so I'll take it.
  • 'Babylon' is probably the highest profile movie to be snubbed and I can't figure it out; it must be a total mess to be such a dud with Pitt, Robbie, and Chiazelle involved and not recognized at all. Still want to see it.
  • Ke Huy Quan is a great story. He's awesome and will win.
  • Unlike the 'COVID' years it's nice to see a wide range of interesting movies that aren't all depressing and/or violent. We get some fantasy, reality, science fiction, biography, mystery, drama, and comedy. Hoping for a fun show!!

C'mon Oscars!!! Best legs in the game...

Very handy! Thanks!

I actually got to watch something earlier today - Causeway (2023 Best Supporting Actor Nominee Brian Tyree Henry). It's a small, relatively tight film at just around 94 minutes and stars Jennifer Lawrence as an injured solider returning home to New Orleans to rehab and adjust to life post-military (though she hopes to get back in the Army). Lawrence is really good here - looks freshly scrubbed and doesn't wear any make up, and given the nature of her injury, does a nice job making you believe in her physical and emotional struggles. She crosses paths with Henry who plays a damaged/hurt mechanic and the two sort of platonically help each other heal. It's not a whirlwind or that eye opening, but I like films where two people connect over their pain and help each other through it. Henry is great here too - if you've watched him in 'Atlanta', you know he does as much with his face and eyes as any actor working. You can watch on Apple TV+.

Looked interesting. Henry was great in Bullet Train.

I'm just surprised that Thomas Newman wasn't nominated again for film score. After all. He's probably been nominated every year for the past 15 years.

I find it ironicc that "All Quiet on the Western Front" is up for Best Picture. The 1930 version with Lew Ayers won Best Picture and Best Director. So is this the first time a re-make is up for these awards?

Tom, I forgot about "A Star is Born". The orginal plus 3 remakes. You are the man.

I saw the first three versions and thought they were utter snooze fests. Yet, for some reason I chose to watch the fourth and got the same results. Some great singers and actors, but I just found the films tiresome tripe. Twenty years from now when the make the fifth version I’m sure I’ll fall for it again.

For those who like Oscar indicators, Cate Blanchett and Austin Butler won for their categories at the BAFTAs, while All Quiet on the Western Front won best picture.
