Pitchers and Catchers report in a few weeks, so it's time to start the 2023 Phillies thread. Please use this thread for all discussions concerning the Philadelphia Phillies for the remaining offseason, spring training, regular season, hopefully the MLB playoffs, and then the offseason.

We had a great thread for the 2022 Phillies, as the team made it to the World Series. You can access that thread at:

Terrible! Baseball, with all their changes, is fast becoming TELEVISION'S game! I know there's a lot of $$$ flying around out there. But, the game itself is changing right before our eyes. And, IMHO, it stinks!

That's fine. I like greater variety. I also understand the point in leveling out wild card races since some teams vying for those spots have relatively weak divisions they play in. The only thing disappointing is only four SNB appearances and none of them at CBP.

I was at spring training today. I felt like a kid all over again. Great day. Watched Painter throw a bit. The kid is long. Also, saw JT, Bohm, Stott, Hoskins, Schwarber and others take BP with Charlie Manuel watching. Awesome experience. Bohm is much bigger than I expected. I also met John Middleton. Seemed like a down to earth, nice guy.

Glorious day in Clearwater yesterday. Assorted ramblings-

1- Since @LB99 mentioned Charlie, it never ceases to amaze me how popular Charlie is. When you see a crowd of people, Charlie is normally in the middle of it. I asked some of the staff if Charlie is still the first arrival every day and they said first to arrive and last to leave.

2- For a team led by some of the game’s best, Marsh is an interesting guy. They didn’t have the music going at the beginning, so Marsh got his sound bar and turned it up around the cage. There are leaders on the field but Marsh looks like a guy that will be a big factor in keeping guys loose. Everyone heard about Schwarber before he came over, Marsh looks to be cut from the same cloth.

3- I had to do a double take when looking at Turner. He looks like he is 18 years old.

4- What I will be watching? I’m interested in how the new rules are incorporated into strategy. Will Turner take advantage of the bigger bases and run more? Will JT still be as effective in throwing runners out given the throw over rules? The analytics will definitely change with the bases and anti-shift.

From the pitching side, I’m really interested in the plan for Painter. I hear the words Spencer Strider a lot. You have to look at the innings pitched that Strider had and assume they manage Painter’s innings on a similar basis. They obviously had a lot of innings from Zach and Nola last year. I’ve heard a little noise on 6 man rotation to manage everyone’s innings a bit.

I don’t think there are a lot of roster moves as they are pretty set. But one thing I’m watching is how they handle extensions for Rhys and Nola. I’d be SHOCKED if Nola breaks camp without an extension. Rhys is the interesting one. If they don’t extend, than I’m not sure what that says about Rhys in Philly.

Their lineup construction is going to be interesting. You would think Turner leads off but with Harper out for awhile, would they possibly hit Turner in the 3 hole? We will know soon enough when they start playing.

I think you can kind of pencil in what you are getting from most guys. The biggest question is what kind of bounce back Nick has. If he is more like 2021 Nick, they are going to cook. He could not lay off anything that ran off the plate last year so that has to be the mission for Long and NIck this spring. I’m interested in adjustments to Nick and what the continued work with Marsh results in.

Let’s get this started. It’s going to be a bloodbath in the division. I think you should see a wild three team race.

Agree on all points. Marsh was clearly the guy having the most fun. My wife also noticed that there wasn’t any music until he showed up and then he was dancing around the cage when the music was on.

I also totally agree about Turner. Full honesty, I didn’t recognize him. He looks like my high school senior and some of his friends.

There is something about Charlie that just pulls you toward him. He is just such a charismatic guy. I was near the cage when he walked out and everyone just started saying hello to him and he was smiling from ear to ear and waving to everyone. He then immediately went over to John Clark from NBC10 in Philadelphia and shook his hand and had a conversation with him. I could be wrong, but I can’t imagine a lot of professional coaches have friendships with media members, but Charlie was clearly happy to see Clark.

I walked away from yesterday saying those guys should wake up every single morning and say, “I can’t believe they pay me to do this”. I had a blast just watching. I hope they had a blast actually being on the field and fully appreciate the gifts they have been given. As a former HS outfielder, I would have paid them money to just grab a glove and head out in the outfield to shag fly balls from those guys.

I was wondering where Bo was since I didn’t see him yesterday. Last year, the first cars you always saw at the complex were Charlie and Bowa’s. Two lifers to put it mildly.

Heard at gym this morning… Phillies only have one series against NL East teams in first 50 games

Bowa was at the upper 1/2 field when I got there. Near the stadium ticket office. He was with 2 other guys chatting. One of them looked like Nola, not sure who the other one was? When the regulars were done with batting practice they went up to the 1/2 field and ran the bases a little before they called it a day.

Thanks, wanted to make sure that he’s doing well health wise. Both him and Charlie have said that as long it seems the youngsters are listening, they will keep going. It’s always great seeing them both.

I read Machado currently plans to opt out of his Padres contract after '23 leaving five years and $150 million on the table. He feels there's more money to be had given how recent contracts have soared. I wonder if any current Phils have a similar contract which allows for a player opt-out. Of course they would only do it if they felt, like Machado, they could stay at the top of the pay scale.

Imagine if Machado had signed with the Phillies and then announced this? Philly sports talk radio would be incensed right now. It’s fully within his contractual right to do what he is doing, but boy, does it seem selfish on the surface.

Reports say that Song was discharged from the Navy and will report to Phillies spring training. Obstacles still exist, but this is one big hurdle to them keeping him.
