A Tale of Three Portals
Different paths to success for UT, LSU and the Gamecocks.
UT and Maryland are the quintessential portal team. The ‘24 class will be Harper’s 5th recruiting class. So far she has failed miserably.
With Boyd from the ‘24 class that will make 9 HS recruits and 2 overseas players for a total of 11. 6 have transferred out including 2 of her only 3 5***** players. She has not retained in state talent. Despite this the program has succeeded with back to back 25 win seasons.
Because of 12 transfer portal players in 4 years. It has been a mix of top tier talent leaving for UT, Rickea Jackson and Jewel Spear. This talent has been combined with Mid Major players who blossomed or filled a role.
UT is officially a portal school.
LSU In three seasons has brought in 20 players; 10 freshman recruits 1 JUCO and 9 portal players.
For Mulkey the portal has been a godsend to revamp a program quickly and not have to experience growing pains.
This year’s incoming class brought in HVL and Morrow from the portal and also the #1 recruiting class. Clearly Mulkey is attempting to move the foundation of the program to HS players. Can she do that?
They have 1 player committed so far for the ‘24 class #95 PG Jada Richard. They are playing go large or go home with who they are targeting. They missed on Koval. Strong, Cambridge and Edwards are left.
Hit on two and transition complete, hit on one and it’s iffy, 0 fer and they are in the portal market full force this spring.
The last 5 rosters(including this season)for the Gamecocks has included 4 portal players; Littleton, Cardoso, Fletcher, and Paopao. The portal usage has been very selective and need driven, except for Cardoso who just fell in our lap.
We signed 16 recruits, 15 HS, 1 JUCO. So far only 3 have left; Russell who was a total bad evaluation, by everybody not just our staff, she is stuck on the end of the bench for a bad UK team. Rivers, playing time and Cooper playing time. Really good for the team talent and the era.
Dawn is not afraid to use the portal but it is clearly an adjunct based on need. It’s what you expect and want a stable top tier program to be.
