51-14 Gamecocks at the halftime break. Cardoso has 13 pts on 6-8 shooting, with 5 boards and 4 assists. Fulwiley has 11 pts on 4-7 shooting, 3-5 from behind the arc, and 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Rutgers struggling mightily, with 6-30 shooting from the field - 0-12 from behind the arc - and 18 first-half turnovers (!!!)......

Gamecocks win 100-55. Gamecocks shoot 43-85 (50.6%) from the field, 10-27 (37.0%) from the 3, and 4-14 (28.6!!!) from the FT line. We need to work on our FT shooting, lol - they WERE 1-5 at one point, then shot 3-9 the rest of way, so there was improvement, hahah.

Cardoso finished with 17 pts on 8-11 shooting in 19 minutes, with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. She played very little in the 2nd half. Fulwiley had 16 pts on 6-13 shooting - 4-9 from behind the arc - in 25 minutes, with 6 boards, 5 assists, and 3 steals.

Chloe Kitts added a double-double in 18 minutes, with 10 pts on 5-9 shooting, with 10 boards and 3 blocks. Bree Hall added 10 pts on 4-8 shooting and 2-4 behind the arc in 21 minutes, and 3 rebounds.

Other notable contributors: Raven Johnson led the team with 9 assists to go with 7 pts, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals in 20 minutes. Tessa Johnson added 9 pts with 4 steals and 3 assists, Starter Sania Feagin played little throughout the game and attempted fewer shots, but towards the end of the game her teammates got her the ball and she ended with 8 pts on 4-4 shooting, with 3 assists. Ashlyn Watkins had 6 pts on 3-6 shooting with 6 rebounds and 4 blocks. Te-Hina Paopao added 6 pts and 4 boards, and Sakima Walker also scored 6 pts. Sahnya Jah scored 5 pts to go with 4 rebounds.

Rutgers was overwhelmed all game long, although they made a more competitive game of it in the 2nd half. They shot 23-74 (31.1%) overall and 3-26 (11.5%) from the 3-pt. line. They had 8 total assists to 25 turnovers, compared to the Gamecocks finishing with 32 assists to 14 turnovers......

I think this team can be special. They all showed moments of brilliance. If I had one negative (besides the free throw shooting) it would be that they passed the ball too much. I know that it was more than likely bc it was a scrimmage but just need to know someone will take charge when it’s needed.
Milaysia is a highlight reel and Tessa impressed me as well.

Thoughts From being at the Game

Conditioning

Raven, Feagin and Kitts have totally reshaped their bodies.
Cardoso, Hall, and Watkins are in great shape.
Sakima Walker is bigger and stronger physically than I thought.
Fulwiley and Jah are in fantastic shape.
Johnson and PaoPao are in shape but they are not as buff as the rest.

FULWILEY

To quote Wellbaum DAMN!
First off, to all of us who were worried she might need to rein it in, play under control more, WELL WE WERE JUST DAMN WRONG. Didn’t force shots or passes. Sees the floor, plays good D, and hustles. Three point range out to 24-25 feet. Got to the rim with ease. Gonna be a monster. I predict she could be FOY and 6th player of the year in SEC.

Cardoso

She made the 6’4” player guarding her look small. Overpowering down low on both ends. Ran the floor. A bit timid when drawn to the perimeter to defend.

Raven, Breezy, Paopao, and Johnson are all now officially 3 point shooters. They not only shot well BUT ALSO shot with confidence. Johnson in particular has a beautiful shot.

Kitts, well just DAMN! 10&10, played the 2,3,4, and 5. Officially a Swiss Army knife 🔪 Strong, tenacious, Ran the floor, rebounded, blocked shots and even drained a 3.

Improvements needed

We were terrible from the free throw line.

Not sure what the rebounding stats were, but did not feel we were dominant as before on the offensive glass.

We played zone a significant amount. Don’t think I have seen us play zone in 5 years.

in man D at times we were slow and unsure in our defensive rotations

I predict that one of the talking points during the SEC season will be comparing Cardoso's scoring and rebounding numbers to Aliyah's last year. I think they will be comparable, if not better. For one, Cardoso is poised to be that good. Secondly, she will be surrounded by better shooters, so that will open up the offense for her. She is also very capable of simply holding the ball over her head and scanning the court for the open player. Again, better shooting will mean more assists and teams less likely to completely collapse on her like they did Aliyah.

I'm not saying that Cardoso will be on Aliyah's level. I mean, while Cardoso is a very good defensive player, Aliyah was great. But with better shooters around her than Aliyah, Cardoso has the potential to put some impressive numbers. I think her chances at winning SECPOY are promising, considering the LSU players will divide votes. Plus, the coaches vote on that award, which could work in her favor.

Overall, it was fun watching the team today. This is Dawn's deepest team in the sense that all the players are rotation players or potential rotation players down the road.

Good observation about the zone. I think it's to keep Cardoso closer to the basket and off the perimeter. It also allows us to better protect her if she gets in foul trouble.

It appears as if we are very deep.....lots of interchangeable parts. Saw some great passes from multiple players. The key to playing time will be who plays the best defense. I know it was just Rutgers but this team is going to be great! I already have them penciled in for the final four....

Looking over the box score, Paopao was only 2 of 7 from the field, nevertheless the team was +37 with her on the court. Mostly due to playing a lot of minutes with Cardoso. Teams have to respect her outside shot, which opens the up the paint.

Paopao also didn't turn the ball over. Raven had 3 TOs and Fulwiley had 5. It will be interesting to see how coach allocates minutes for primary ball handling duties.

I don't want to get my hopes up. Prospects from the state of California and Texas has let me down plenty of times before, but here I am getting my hopes up again.
Still unclear what the ramifications will be of the PAC-12 breakup. Good to see Dawn being aggressive. Maybe there is a window to steal a top prospect from out there.

Saw on another board that Dawn flew to LA last night presumably to do an in home with Kennedy Smith.
Actually I read it wrong and I think the flight was today not last night. Would be super cool to get a birdie tweet tomorrow!

And Milaysia was 4-9 from the arc to lead the team. She seems to want to take those 3's too. We'll be much different than past teams in that we'll have plenty of perimeter options for keeping opposing defenses from collapsing into the paint onto Kamilla and others.

Going back to the 2013-14 season, the last 2 seasons were the worst 3-pt. FG shooting the team has had:

22-23: .310
21-22: .306
20-21: .337
19-20: .349
18-19: .325
17-18: .341
16-17: .333
15-16: .321
14-15: .349
13-14: .347

Hopefully the greater depth of perimeter shooters will see a marked improvement in this area of offense.....

Dawn stated that Fulwiley was a generational talent. Aja Wilson & Boston were our last generational talented players. After one game, she brings excitement off the bench and will only get better. When she penetrates to the basket, she will have two guards waiting in the wings to shoot the three.

My second point is that i would like to see Feagin and Watkins become more active show the desire that Jah showed in posting up and requesting the ball down low.

She never stops working on her game. She is still being coached as her level of potential has yet to peak. That is what her coach is saying.
The pressure to validate is by no means diminished by that construction.
