Clayton White has introduced a new defensive look during the past season in 2023. The 3-3-5 defensive scheme with 5 defensive backs, 3 linebackers, and 3 defensive lineman. Is the 4-2-5/3-3-5 schemes sufficient enough for Carolina to compete against the big dogs in 2024? Complete the poll and submit your feedback now!

I'll say we should run both 4-2-5 and 3-3-5, IF we're able to land another couple of DL in the portal. We simply don't have the horses to run a 4 man front right now. If we can add LT and/or Kennard to Jules in the portal, we should be fine there.

I'll echo what 18 said though.

Agree. Ideally, you would like to be able to run both dependent on the situation.

Hopefully we will have a new DC in 2024 so this will be a moot point
I don’t think that’s happening friend. I think that would be the wrong move to make considering the talent that White has brought in, plus the mid season adjustments that were successfully implemented.

I like the 3-3-5. Especially with how teams use the spread to disguise plays - the 3-3-5 gives a lot of options to disguise blitzes. Though that's also the issue, you have to send one more than the front 3 every time for the most part.

You need really good DL and LBs to have only 2. 4-2-5 is a great defense when you can get pressure with 4 and your LB can cover the middle. You also need 4 Nasty DL to defend the run. So 4-2-5 is not much of an option for us with the talent depth we have.

Yeah. I agree. That’s why I said depending on what we land in the portal. Already got Jules. LT still in the board, as well as Kennard. If we just get one of those we’ll be in good shape with what we have coming back.

doesn't matter if you run a 4/2/5 or a 3/3/5 or a 1/10...if you dont have SEC caliber players you're not stopping the teams that do

This, right here. One of my pet peeves…remember back on how many potential interceptions we dropped, many of which were gimmes. Scores that were then given up on that same drive. Over-running on blitzes or qb pressures. Open field tackles just whiffed with no real difficulty on the ball carriers part. Scores that were then given up same drive. None of these happened once or twice; they happened on.the.reg. Players win games, not schemes.

To my concern, I'm not sure that Beamer is making any changes on staff. Lots of teams, including Clemson, already have. And Clemson appears to have upgraded bigly. 😞

It's old. The 3-3-5 was first introduced to Carolina during Lou Holt's 2nd year. The defense was lacking the numbers on the DL, so he and Charlie Strong visited with Wake Forrest and some other schools/coaches and came up with the 3-3-5.

If you don't have legit DL talent in the SEC it doesn't matter what defense you run. The 3-3-5 is for teams with weak DLs and the 4-3 is for teams with strong DL but weak LBs. 3-4 is the best defense if you have decent talent at DL and LB.

Without talent on the LOS, a team is doomed.

I like the results we started to get with 3 down but I wonder if we will be too predictable. Our defense rarely threw any curves at the opposition and we didn't make them think.

I have concerns about our depth at linebacker and the coaching of the backers. For the last two years we have been very late at getting to the line and filling gaps, though that improved remarkably by Deebo and Bam in the last part of the season. I'm just night convinced we are providing the coaching at this position that we need. I also think going to 4 backers could really stretch our roster depth.

3 Down lineman could only be pulled off by top teir programs. IT is stupid. WIth our personell last year i would have preferred all lineman stnading creating a little deception for the opposing O Line.
Otherwise our LBs were making tackles 8 to 12 yards down the field. When ever we stacked 5 down last year we improved the run stoppage quickly.
