he seems a bit small for TE at the moment, and Jerry Cross coming in adds another big TE. Dinkins is currently #4 in the depth chart, and could wind up as #5. is there a better fit for him?

looking at his HS film the guy is a talent. is there a better move with him? Move him to be the big WR we have lacked? Move him to LB as he was a beast in HS as DE/LB?

Hate to see the guy transfer as he does look like a talent.

I'd love to hear within CJF's pre Spring comments that Dinkins will be practicing at LB, specifically Will LB.

He is a great athlete with nice size and could be a terror at LB.

But then again, who knows, he could eventually be a terror at TE.............

I sure can not look at an athlete and judge where he should play-but right now there is clearly a bigger need at LBer than te and we can continue to recruit well at TE. See what happens but hate to see a player buried on depth chart when at another position our depth is surely NOT ideal.

So, you have never been to practices, you have not seen this kid play any appreciable minutes in a game, you think he has talent based on your astute knowledge of his high school skill level, and you have already written him off as entering the transfer portal,

That's awesome.

was that a question? I am looking for where I wrote him off.

The purpose of this forum is to discuss the team that we follow. We all have opinions, and make observations as fans.....that is what fans do. None of us actually see practice, but that does not stop numerous comments on players by everyone on this forum.

My observation was simply that this guy looked like a very good DE/LB player at a competitive HS level. Further, it looks like some schools were actually recruiting him as a LB, so that means that some experienced coaches did see him playing on DEF. We have more holes at DE and LB than we do at TE. Dinkins is smaller than we normally see at TE, and he is #4 on the depth chart = not a good look to get much PT. In addition, we are bringing in another TE in Jerry Cross who is more classical TE for us. It would seem that this opens logical discussion around possible position move.

Finally, we have seen a couple years of portal action where the 4/5* players do not hang around much more than a couple years if they do not find a role.

If the topic was not interesting to you, then why comment?

Dinkins looked really good physically when we went to open workouts a few weeks ago. We'll get a good look at him in the coming weeks, but I hear positive things about his development so far. Not saying he's gonna jump pass the other three on the depth chart this year, but he's a pretty good athlete.

The transfer portal makes position changes more problematic than in the past. While it certainly isn't unheard of.....if an athlete sees himself (in this case) as a tight end, it's more likely he'll look for greener pastures than wonder over to the other side of the ball and "start learning all over."

I would not be opposed to a position switch but I would not be overly concerned about his size. If he was 6-4 225 as a true FR it is reasonable to believe that by year three in the program he could be 250 and a pretty nice looking TE with three years of eligibility remaining. I would imagine if he were to switch positions it would be DE, not LB, and since he was not a HS DE who knows how that would go.
