I guess they aren’t a fan of our tuition (tied, of course, to ROI).

F*ck us.
If I recall correctly, and I wouldn't swear to it 100%, but I think FORBES uses Out of State tuition costs in their comparatives database for Public Schools.
Penn State's OOS tuition _ which, as any parent from NJ or VA knows, is crazy high - but so are many of the other 'Flagships". Where PSU stands alone, is with the In State tuition costs - which are roughly double - in some cases more than double - the In State tuition rates for our Big Ten peers. That, IIRC, doesn't even enter in to the Forbes algorithm.... if it did, obviously, that would have a negative effect on their perceptions of PSU.

That said - when every Big Ten school is in the top 200 (even Nebraska and Iowa) and PSU is not only not in the top 200 (which really isn't even very select company) - but is 208 places LOWER than the lowest other Big Ten school - that should set off sirens and red flags - regardless of what oddities and distortions one might disagree with wrt Forbes methodologies.

Near term pain. Wait until PSU moves up to 399 next year. We'll celebrate then.

I've maintained much of my enthusiasm for Penn State football, but I'm starting to lose some of that. I now think a lot of it was that I took pride in the University's academic standing as well. Now, Penn State appears to be nothing more than those schools we use to smugly look down upon as mere football factories. The one bright light is that if this board is any indication, the alumni base is not going to stand for this much longer.

Saw this train coming from a distance...Hate to say it, no I don't, saw it coming a long time ago. We got pigs at the trough, we invited them in and here's what you get...408 but hey we got some wealthy leaders and a ton of out of state fools paying the bill.

Neeli and the bot laugh at our tanking ranking. High out-of-state tuition is a point of pride. PSU is for trust-fund kids, not kids from the hood.

We may be ranked 408, but our students smell better.

o_O

Neeli has to be elated at this ranking, we have no place to go than up.

How in the hell can Michigan, OSU, Northwestern, and all the other B10 school hundreds of slots above us figure this out and Penn State can't? Or to look out my window, how can f&^%ing West Chester University figure this out and Penn State can't?

All of a sudden we're seeing how rotten things are with the BOT, who are slapping each other on the back for a job well done and telling Neeli she's the bomb. And we shouldn't believe our lying eyes.

How soon until the BOT realizes that their biggest problem is one trustee who refuses to be 'on board' and keeps pointing out exactly how deep we're in it?

And Alvin deLevie is up for re-election too, if he's running again. I guess we'll see him back here around January, along with Football Trustee Brandon.

By the way, someone please help me out here, as I went to Penn State.

”409 minus 1 equals 408”

I don’t get it.

Have to have it for it to count, right? I believe there are more international students at UP (undergrad) than black students.
And why is this a problem? Are we not accepting qualified black students who've submitted an application?

Do HBCU's worry about their percentages of non-black students?

One last question; Do international students count toward diversity?

Most recent data supplied by PSU.

This is nice data. I just ran some quick number and found:

Black applicants submitted 8,777 applications and have a 49% admission rate with a 11% enroll rate.
International applicants submitted 13,801 applications and have a 48% admission rate with a 13% enroll rate.
White applicants submitted 46,152 applications and have a 45% admission rate with a 29% enroll rate.

Conclusions: Not many black students apply to PSU. Those that do apply have a very high admittance rate (only hispanics have a higher admission rate of 61%). Of those admitted, very few actually enroll.

When throwing a party I usually stop inviting those that never show up.

Been discussed - here and elsewhere - before.

In the current FORBES, they are 60th - 5th out of 14 in the ACC, and have risen rapidly in recent years (post-Barron, as of a couple years ago, haven't checked more recently, they were the largest rising of any P5 university)

So, instead of wondering how you can make your party more attractive, you simply stop inviting people. That tracks.

This board isn’t an indication of that and looking down smugly at others is why the media crucified Joe and PSU.

I agree we need to turn around our academic standing, but we should take a real look in the mirror in regards to looking down on others. Every school has problems which we found out in 2011.
