A couple of stat's that may shine some hope

After looking at the official game stat's, and they are bad, we may have some hope to hang what is left of our head on. Most of these are fixable, which explains the Monday morning special teams practice:

1) Our defense wasn't that bad. We held them to a total of 269 yards, and most of that was in the 4th quarter due to our incompetence on offense. Tech had an average field position of their 42 for the 1st half and their 48 for the 2nd.
We on the other hand had our 19 on the 1st and the 25 for the 2nd. Again, special teams put them in great position by either terrible punts or fumbles. I feel we can fix these with better punting and better ball control i.e. Peques.

2) Special teams absolutely killed us. The interceptions were bad, but we gave up more crap with special teams than I've ever seen. Case in point: They punted right before the end of the 1st half and downed it on our 1. We got held and had to punt from our 8.. The punt went 33 yards and they ran it back to our 13. That's a net of 5 yards.

Kickoff from the 2nd half-fumble, but we get it back with an interception. We move it up the field and stall out, but punt them into a field postion of the 19, worst of the night. We hold and then Smith fumbles and gives it to them on our 9. They score to go up by 2. We then get the ball and drive it right down the field before another interception with that late hit penalty. We get another personal foul and puts them down on the 12, but we hold them to a field goal. We get it and drive again, stall out, and punt it back. They drive and we hold them, but yet again, field goals from 50 and good.(special teams again). Then our only bright spot when we stall out yet again, and hit their runner on the punt. Great field position. But, we decide not to run, but throw it with Lee. We did not hand off to Dixon once during that last drive and have to punt-the dreaded 16 yarder.

I'm not feeling wooly by any means, but our defense didn't do that bad. They had their back against the wall all night, and by late in the 4th, they ran out of gas. They were on the field for 10+ minutes in the 4th. The offense did move the ball at times. The int's didn't help, but didn't put us in terrible shape like the special teams mistakes. I feel with Peques back and hopefully Richards will be punting, we'll see a definite turnaround. Don't give up hope yet. Just think back to LSU last year.

got blown out. We didn't in this game. It was a "sure win" but with 5 turnovers, throw the baby out with the wash. We should have gone in 14-3 at halftime, but a ****** punt and no coverage ruined that and let them back in. We had 348 total yards, and ****** field position the entire game. They played way out of their league and we didn't. We let them hang around and look what happened. This team was not prepared to play, but our defense wasn't as bad as everyone thinks. It sucks we lost Chaney, but I promise you this, and you guys can call me out next week, SEL will pay. Croom is a Bama guy and he knows what Saturday night meant. You don't lose those kind of games and we did. He knows that he had a lot of guys were on the field that weren't ready to play and he takes the blame. They won't be out there this week. I promise you that you will see a different team this weekend and a different one against Auburn.

then how do you explain beating Auburn last year and Bama the past 2? It's called adversity and he's dealing with it. It's not all Ellis Johnson. Harbison did a decent job based on where the special teams put him. Hell, where's the bitchin' about Stringer? And he's from my hometown!

Two of their drives stalled out in the end zone after 13 and 10 yds. Their qb couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. I don't remember us having a sack, but could be wrong. All that and we still played LaTech. Other than that I would agree our defense did an admirable job given what they had to work with(Our offense and special teams).Oh yea, and we still were playing LaTech.

You nail me for stating that I still think, and up until Saturday night, everyone on this board was praising Croom. He beat Auburn by capitalizing on their turnovers. Same with Bama. It's called giveaways and takeaways and last year, we were in the plus column. Now, we are -3. If we are going to win a game this year, we will have to hold onto the football, which is what we did last year. Carroll through what, 3 int's last year?

Your comment earlier in the thread was that with 5 turnovers you can "throw the baby out with the wash". Then you wonder how someone would explain the Auburn win last year. Simple - they turned over the ball to you guys five times. The turnovers explain your win as much as your loss. </p>

If it hadn't been, LA Tech would have blown us out. But the defense did wear down (or quit) in the 4th quarter. If they can't get that fixed, we're going to have trouble against better and more physical offenses.

I will promise you that Croom has told this team that they will have to play all out from this point on. He addressed on Monday what was wrong(special teams) and will probably take a more hands on approach. I know that I'll get slammed for that comment, but being in Alabama, I've learned a lot about Bear Bryant and one thing he tried to do was to let asst. do their job. That didn't happen in this game at all. Croom takes responsibility and will make adjustments. Watch and see. I said on this board last year that we would be Auburn and I got slammed. I'm not making that statement at this point, but we will win big this weekend and give Auburn all they want. There wasn't much fight in this team, mainly with the offense due to Carroll, but they did show promise. Again, takeaway the turnovers and the 2 incredible field goals by Tech and we win this thing. We didn't play it the way we played last year, and I don't mind seeing us go back to the chess match.
