"With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph -- so help us God."
From FDR's speech on 8 Dec 1941.
FDR asked Congress to declare war on Japan (not Germany or Italy). We were not at war with Germany until 10 Dec. 1941, when Germany declared war on the US. I consider this to be the biggest mistake Hitler made.
By far, it was our greatest generation, and I recognize that even not being a part of that generation. What the U.S. did in WW II is truly amazing. We fought, and won, a full out war in two theaters on the sea, on the land, and in the air. At the same time, we not only armed and supplied ourselves, we armed and supplied our allies.
Probably not- at least not where and when- but trouble was in the air. Best book I've read on it is this:Truth to the thinking that we knew it was coming?
No, I don’t believe it.Truth to the thinking that we knew it was coming?
The link below will get you started. There has been a lot of good WWII revisionist history over the last 20-25 years with more still coming out.Truth to the thinking that we knew it was coming?
Honeymooned in Hawaii in 95. Got off the plane in Honolulu and went straight to Pearl. Before the rehab of the base and the national park areas, we went past barracks that still had scars from the attack.Took the family to Hawaii a couple of years ago. Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona were two of the highlights of the trip. It's a very moving experience to be at that memorial.
I don't think we did but it's almost a certainty that Churchill did...Truth to the thinking that we knew it was coming?
Thanks Nitt. I'll be sure to look for it.Probably not- at least not where and when- but trouble was in the air. Best book I've read on it is this:
I think you will find it a great read. One of Prange's conclusions was that Gen Short (Army commander in Hawaii) and Admiral Kimmel were not at all on the same page in regard to defense, Kimmel thought the Army was there to protect the fleet in port, Short thought the Navy was there to protect his airbases. Thanks Nitt. I'll be sure to look for it.
